Multimodal -- bike + bus + train + bike. 44 miles one way for the entire distance. Anywhere from 4 miles to 44 miles one way by bike depending on what mix I decide to take.

First day of commuting to work. I have tendonitis in my knees so I'm trying to get that down by easing off the running for the next few weeks. So I bought a bike and had gone on several rides the past two weeks. The longest was 22 miles. Other rides were 10-14 miles total. I knew it was 9 miles to school via car, but you can't ride a bike on I74 so I have to backtrack into downtown Rock Island, go over the RI Arsenal bridge into Davenport and then take bike paths with minimal rodes into Bettendorf. Grade total of 12.6-7 miles. Two major hills on the ride, the rest is pretty flat.

15 miles each way...by bike and bus. the bike part can either be 4 miles each way or 7, depending upon where i catch the transbay bus. i'd love to ride all the way but the powers that be won't allow bikes on the san rafael bridge. my other option is to take the bus to san francisco and then ride all the way to san rafael...which is 23 miles.

The bike part of my route is 4-5 miles each way, depending upon which park 'n ride I go to. Not sure of the bus mileage - it generally takes about 15-20 minutes or so.

When I ride to a client site (I'm self-employed), it's generally a 7-10 mile roundtrip commute--mostly downhill getting there and almost all uphill getting home. I live in the city, and the clients that are close enough to ride to are usually in downtown Seattle, or just south of downtown. The shortness of that trip has not, of course, stopped me from having a dedicated commuter/errand bike. Heh. :-)

To my first job it is about 4 miles one way, then from there I ride to a evening part time job which is about another 4 miles, and then the ride home is about 8 miles.

I rode to work on my day off yesterday, just to see how long it would take. A hair over 7 miles and 29 minutes at a pretty ok pace.

A 37 mile round trip over rolling hills. Don't cycle it every day though. Probably 3 days a week average.

My ride is only 3 miles each way. Unfortunately, I am in outside sales and am a slave to my car for the whole day. Bummer.

I ride about 15 miles each way, about 3 days a week. It's a new commute for me but I love it. I'm lucky that my job has a shower in the building so I don't worry about getting sweaty or muddy. Otherwise I take the subway.

My usual ride is about 5 and an a half miles each way if I choose to take the road route. There are a couple of alternatives, 5 weirs which takes a path along the side of the river Don or the canal tow-path.

I bike from my home in Newtown (in Sydney, Australia) to my office which is just next door to the Olympic stadium site (from the 2000 Olympics).
The route I follow used to be about 20 km, but since I bought my road bike, it's kind of got longer (around 25km now) ... amazingly :-) I'm enjoying the roadie so much, and I'm so much faster on it, that it was probably only natural that my commute would get stretched, rather than opt to spend less time on the bike.
The weather here is pretty nice most of the year. It's summer now, so that means 70s and 80s every day. Winter still is pretty good - only 50s, so it's shorts-weather every day of the year.
Even in the wet, with no brakes (I hate that about roadies), very little tred, I still ride. I'm about 15 mins faster than the train and 10 mins faster than a car.
2 Wheels Rocks! :-)

I think it's about 13 miles each way now, but unfortunately I have to deal with a punishing hill climb and a very narrow street for about the front 4 miles. They are supposedly putting in a path over the river that will mostly eliminate this part, so looking forward to that!

My commute is from the Ballantyne area in Charlotte to the Steel Creek area - also about 14-15 miles depending on the specific route I travel. Fenders = yes. Rack = yes. Beater bike? Never.

I usually only rock the beater bike if I'm riding to the bus stop. The beater has wide knobby tires and front suspension. Good for singletrack and ice boulders/snowplow debris. Bad for efficient, fast commuting. My trip is about the same distance as yours. It's a slog to ride a mountain goat those distances on pavement. One hand position, inefficient rolling, horrible gearing for the road? No thanks.
My road bike commuter doesn't handle ice or snow well at all, and I don't feel like subjecting it to the horrors of the briny, gritty ice melt traction mix sludge they dump on the road out here.

10 miles each way. I definitely use the bus and metro when not pedaling. Washington DC put bike carriers on all of their metrobuses about a year ago which is rad since you can't put a bike on the metro trains during rush hour, and locking your bike at a station is a dodgy proposition.

I live in Helsinki, Finland. Here is a link which shows approximately my regular commuting route in winter season:
The actual distance is little less than indicated, 9.1 kilometres each way (slightly short of 6 miles). I do this route daily with a cyclocross bike.

It was 17 miles each way, but my new job is about 5.5 round trip. I miss the old commute, though it is nice to leave 15 minutes before work. I still have the long commute about once a week.

Around five each way during daylight savings time. Otherwise it's 10-11. Thats after driving 30 miles to the parking spot.

13 miles roundtrip. About 1 mile on bike path the rest I navigate with the
regular morning autos. Lite traffic in the morning and in the afternoon it can
be tough with the big trucks.posted about 3 years ago | Report

I ride about 2.6 miles one way. If I'm in a hurry I can cut off about 1/2 mile but then the ride is not as scenic and nerve wracking because it is on a main road. It is mostly uphill on the way in which makes for a very easy (and fast) ride home.

My commute is 5.2 miles -- 10.3 (or so) to-and-back -- from home to Noah's backyard (or front yard as it may be). No multi-modal; only cycling. Twelve months a year.

I go every day that weather and laundry allows (I get my shirts done near the office) on a knock around mountainbike. It's 5.5 miles one way from the West End of Richmond Virginia to downtown. It's all on roads since there isn't much of a bike path system in town.

A simple 12 mile round trip with plenty of room in a very nice "parking lane" along the busy road.

I have a 9 mile commute total. 4.5 one way. Lightly used roads...some sidewalk. I really like it because it goes past the Keebler cookie factory in Grand Rapids Michigan.

I used to have a 10 km roundtrip before, through some busy roads, some calm roads and some trails. But, to avoid the slush of the trails during the rainy season, i started riding on road completely, which now makes a 20km roundtrip. And i'm loving the extra workout and speed thrills.
I even go on dates on my cycle..... my girlfriend doesnt mind me sweaty to touch, and probably likes me salty to taste :D

I recently moved office, so I took it as an opportunity to ride into work. Normally, I would ride my bike on the weekends etc, but saw this as a really good way to get a bit fitter. A whole bunch of us from work decided to try this out (there are only 197 car parking spaces for a 3000 person office ;)). I am a bit dubious about how many will keep it up once the weather turns miserable though.
When I have something on in the morning that is personal (bank, doctor etc) I get the bus in.

30-32 mi if I ride all the way, 5 mi if I don't, one way. I ride 5 days a week right now. The first 1 mi and the last 0.5mi are on the roads, but the rest is on a bicycle trail. Can't get much better than that! EDIT: Weapon of choice: Surly Steamroller 47/19 fixed gear.

At a minimum, it's a 6-mile commute, leaving from an established suburb, passes through numerous side streets, then segues into the downtown area in a run-down before arriving. My morning tends between 6 and 8 miles. In the afternoons, I try to catch extra mileage either doing miles in local parks (generally excellent) or taking longer routes which may include our local Riverwalk or tonier neighborhoods along the river.

I usually commute 8 miles round trip 4-5 times a week - paved path most three quartersof the way. Nice ride. I leave at 6:00 am ish & head home at 4:30 pm ish. I don't multi ride, no need. When it rains I usually ride anyway unless it is extremely cold outside.

Hi,
I daily commute 25-30Kms to my workplace on my cycle. Though the office provides cab facility. on the way we have more inclines and declines but smooth. So i use slicks for the tarmac, but for off road, the MTB type tyres. No multi-mode. once on cycle i cycle. else use other mode of transport. Thankfully the Public transport is improving a little bit. but still a long way to go for the improvement.
About the rains, if it rains when i am returning. I enjoy it and pedal on getting drenched. but not on the way to workplace.. !!posted about 2 years ago | Report

I have a 12-14 mile trip each way to work. Looking into multi-modal, but my Xtracycle won't fit in a bike locker very well (its 7'+ long)... Car -> Bus other days when not biking, but want to get that to Bike -> Bus soon. *Might need a new commuter steed tho.

I live in Southern California and my commute, entirely by bike, is 14 miles each way. The morning commute is really nice with some sweeping downhill stretches. The route home can be a bit of a challenge with one steep climb before heading home. I always feel better after a commute though sometimes the thought of the big climb on the return trip can be a deterrent. I ride a Surly Long Haul Trucker with fenders, a rear rack and a solo pannier. I love this bike.

I'm living in Budapest, Hungary. The traffic in Budapest is terrible, there is always traffic jam. The workplace is 8 miles from my home, it is often more than an hour by car. But by bicycle, it's just 25 or 26 minutes.
There is a video about the route:
