what distance

Akai is my 6 month old setter. I do get comments from dog owners (non-runners mostly) to be carefull, because of his bones and joints. And of course I wouldn't run 8 K if I hadn't worked up to it. But I think he got pretty used to it now. And as he's running on a leash, he doesn't do two or three stretches where I do one. So, I feel pretty confident. However, if anyone experienced would like to comment I'd appreciate it.

  • I rescued my two lab mix dogs when they were a year old. I started running with them about a year later. They are now 6 years old and still LOVE to go running. Just like a runner we had to build on their mileage gradually. I make sure we do shorter runs when it is hot out. We do 4 miles on average 3-4 times per week. They have occasionally ran a 10K. I usually can tell whether or not they are up to going farther by their breathing and if they still have that zip in their pace!

Ha michelle, thank you! Akai is now a little older (10 months) and he loves running. 4 miles for 3-4 times is no problem for him. In a week or so I will start training with him for longer distances, 12 k (8 miles) first, and half marathon (mmuch) later. He's telling me when he thinks it's been enough by rubbing his nose to my hand and by taking my sleeve in his mouth. I can tell he needs running longer when he gets too energetic to stay indoors ;-)
