Swim events/races?

I was never a competitive swimmer, though I enjoy swimming and do it regularly.
I've read, though, about master swimmers who basically swim races of varying distances such as 5k.

I'm not a master swimmer, and I usually just swim freestyle. Does anyone know if there really are any amateur swim events or races? I thought it might be fun to try one, but I don't really know anything about it.
