Two Hundred Squats Challenge

squats less than 90 degrees

I completely agree that squats are essential to overall strength and conditioning. However, i believe we are cheating ourselves if not getting below the knee, below a 90 degree angle. If indviduals build up to this correct form they will have good muscle strength around the joint, and continue to build muscle strength of the lower ext, acturally protecting the knee from injury and stresses. How many of the activities that we perform daily involve bending more than 90 degrees? Try tying you shoes, putting on your pants, sitting on the toilet, getting up off the floor, to name a couple. The 200 squat challenge is a great idea, but we need to get below parallel, below the 90 degree mark, engage all the muscles surrounding that joint.

  • Thanks for the tip.

  • Good tip. I can see this being a source of injury though for people who have poor form or poor muscle tone to begin with.

  • After reading this again I just want to say AGAIN, thanks for the tip. You make a good argument. I can't wait to get started on this. I do have two options now. If I am going to go below 90% then I think I will do the movements exaggerated and slow. I have seen some training plans that incorporate squats with videos that show the people going to not below 90% but doing the squats very quickly, sometimes even using an balance ball. I think that both methods have their benefits and I may do both.
