Honolulu Routes

Does anyone have any secret running routes they'd like to share? Well, maybe not secret routes, because obviously you wouldn't share those (unless you're a bad secret keeper, in which case, please, by all means). And we already know about Ala Moana Beach Park, so you don't need to add that.

You might mention elevation changes and car/bicycle traffic concerns. Tips on parking and restrooms and water fountains would be cool to add as well.

  • okay, so I guess I should share one to get started. I mapped this on USATF.org so you can follow the link.

This is probably my favorite route. It's about 4 miles and it's safe to run. There's a couple of intersections you should pay attention to, but nothing dangerous (always use crosswalks and make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them). You can do a nice loop at the park to warm up. After that it starts with a little hill to end the first mile, then a slight downhill up until the end of the third mile. There's a pretty good hill for the last mile and you end up right back where you started.

Lots of free parking at the park, restrooms, water fountains. The route goes by Moanalua High School, and if you start there instead of the park, you can hit the hill first and cruise in at the end.

If you take the first right once you get on to Mahole Street, you can detour to a dog park and continue on to Moanalua Gardens (which is beautiful!) and turn around to get back on to the route. I think it would probably add a mile at the most.

Anyway, that's my contribution. Let me know if you try it and how much you enjoy it if you do!

  • Lagoon drive behind the airport was a favorite of mine.
Off Nimitz highway take the turn onto Lagoon drive (across from the Harley dealership) and drive all the way to the end of the road (about 2 miles).
Park your car and run all the way up to the 1st traffic light, turn around and head back. Each out and back is exactly 4 miles.
