Run home from work?

posted about 3 years ago | Report

So lately I have been thinking that my commute is a little stale... so why not run the 3 miles home each day? Bus in the morning, running gear in tow, and change before leaving the office...

Does anyone else include running as part of their commute? Mine is pretty flat, almost entirely along the water (Embarcadero, left at the ball park, right on 16th into Potrero Hill).

I doubt I will run it 5 days a week (for example, a birthday in teh office means happy hour from 5 to 7... ), but if I can get in 3 to 4, I am very happy with that...

Anyone have suggestions or strategies to get running into your daily life in other creative ways?

  • I don't do this, but there's an article on it in the new issue of runner's world. Seems like a great idea. I try to walk to and from wherever I'm going as much as possible. Way less aggravating than taking the bus and infinitely safer than riding a bike in this city, especially given my non-ability to balance.

  • I think that's a great idea :) I work from home now, but when I used to go into the office, I ran home almost everyday...it is an awesome way to use the time it would take you to commute as exercise time :)

  • I sometimes run to work. This was more difficult when I lived on the Great Highway... These days I live in Alamo Square, so it's much more manageable. There's also a gym right next to my office, where I can stretch and shower after my run.

I don't often run home because I like to carry my work bag with me on the bus.. and then, like you, there's the occasional happy hour post work.

I also run during lunch a whole bunch. It's nice to take a quick break from meetings and such for an easy 40 mins outside.

But, mixing running and work takes some pre-planning. I remember when I first stared doing it, thinking that it was so much harder than just throwing on my shoes and heading out the door. Then I came to my senses and realized it's a lot easier than most sports (tennis, racketball, baseball, even swimming...).

Have fun, Nathan and enjoy your runs home!
