Secret Bay Area Runs

posted over 3 years ago | Report

Hi ladies,

Do you have any secret spots for great runs? A goal for this year is to branch out where I run, since I always run outside (thank you, non-rainy rainy season). Recently, instead of heading north from the mission, I decided to head south toward the excelsior and I discovered....McLaren Park! Soooooo beautiful, extremely quiet despite its proximity to the Cow Palace area, tons of trails through wooded forest. I only ran into one other person the whole time I was in the park. Oh, and it's a pretty big park, too. I actually got a little lost in there, but as long as you have a decent sense of direction you're not likely to stay lost for too long.

Hmmm, maybe I'll go there today...

  • Huh... I've never been down there. Sometimes I'm skeptical of SF parks, though.. if they're not too crowded. You never know who is going to be lurking in between the trees.

I like running around Lake Merced, have you done that? Nice easy rolling hills (barely even hills...), and it's beautiful out there. If you want you can head up to the Fort, or stop by the Zoo after. And there's a new Java Beach on Sloat - they have great post run bagels... or post run beers, depending on when you do your run!

If you want to go way south, the Dish at Stanford is an amazing run. I call this "Destination Running" when you drive your car to go run somewhere. I used to live in Palo Alto, so I got to know the Dish really well.

I also like to run in Pacifica. There are some great hills along the water that go up and down the bluffs, and the sea breeze is extremely refreshing.

  • I like running Lake Merritt, it's flat and easy, but crowded. It's a 5k too, which makes it nice run for training. I also like running Inspiration Point in Tilden Park. It's gorgeous but very hilly. One of my other favorite runs, but really hard for me is running from my house (in Oakland) through Lake Temescal and up Tunnel road. Once you are up, it's gorgeous views of the city and bay. Round trip it's 8 miles, 4 miles up, 4 miles down. (lost 2 toenails on that one).

  • Golden Gate park of course has loads of hidden spots. On one of my long runs I found a polo field...what? :)

I'd like to check out Presidio sometime, I've heard that there are some awesome trails there.
