Is it worth it to buy Nike+?

posted about 2 years ago | Report

Hey guys I am a runner and I wanted to know if I should be getting Nike+. I've read some people don;t like it because it doesn't log very well or it break..bla bla. What is your experience with it? I really like the the idea of it.

  • Boone,

I returned to running after a long layoff and found it to be very motivating. Is it perfect? No. Frustrating at times? Yes. But for the $30 investment (plus shoes or a pouch to hold the sensor), it's completely worth it. I switched to the Sportband ($60) and gave the iPod attachment to my wife - never a runner, now she loves tracking her mileage. I'd love a Polar or Garmin, but those are $300-400, so it may be a while before I get one.

  • I find the Nike+ Sports Sensor to be worth it... if you already have a compatible iPod it is the lowest cost solution and while not perfectly accurate is plenty accurate once calibrated. Even straight out of the box its +/- 2% for me.

  • It sure has kept me motivated... I have run over 500 miles since getting it a year and a half ago.

  • If you already have an iPod and compatible shoes, then $30 for a fairly spiffy pedometer isn't bad at all. If you don't, I'd shell out for the GPS.

  • I used it when starting out and found it to be a great motivator and as far as fitness hardware goes, it's by many miles the best bang for the buck. I actually still use it along side my Forerunner 405CX just because I find the challenges on Nike+ addictive. Often I have my iPod with me for music anyway.

As far as accuracy goes, I'm surprised at how good it actually is! I've calibrated my sensor, but it didn't make much difference. Using it together with a GPS will reveal that the distance recorded is sometimes up to 200 meters shorter than actual. But for instance today it was only arguing with the Garmin over 10 meters. Also, the calorie formula on the Garmin is supposed to be the most accurate in the industry, but the Nike+ kit usually calculates almost exactly the same!

The only drawback is a slightly buggy website. But for the price of two CDs I'm not gonna argue...

  • I ran with Nike+ for a year, and it was great motivation for me, but as I got more into it and wanted to keep better track of my runs I found it became less and less accurate (someone said it basically always assumes you're running the pace you calibrated it at) and more and more frustrating, even being off by 1/2 a km on a 6km run. I was hesitant to go to a Garmin, but got the 305 for $150 and now I don't know what I ever did without it! So my answer is, if you're not super competitive and just want a general idea of your runs, it's great, but if you want something more accurate, fork over a little extra $ for a 305.
