When I trained for the marathon the TM was in the garage and all I had for entertainment was the radio. I used commercials to speed up and break the monotony. I would also play tricks like I couldn't look at the monitor thingy until after a song and I would try to guess how far I could go in one song.
You could also make a playlist on your ipod that guided different speeds of the run to break the monotony.
I also listen to "this american life" podcasts (there's a great one called how to win friends and influence people that's hysterical). And movies or tv episodes. So far the last two days I've lucked out and been able to run while ds is napping. The movies wouldn't work if he were awake - not really age appropriate to be entertaining enough to distract me.

I usually just listen to music - I've loaded a bunch of very fast 80's music on my iPod and as long as I switch it up every couple of weeks it keeps me entertained.

i propped up a portable dvd player and started watching 'the wire' from the beginning [after hearing an interview with david simon on NPR] i also netflix 'this american life' the tv show since we don't get showtime, or any movie channels for that matter.
that said, i had no new dvds to watch today and so i ran on the tm to a new music playlist and it felt great!
my advice is keep changing it up - sometimes a movie you're excited to watch or a fresh playlist or podcast and keep rotating. good luck!

Music. Or, if I'm at the gym, music and whatever is on tv. Watching sports games is a good way to pass the time, but have gotten a lot of mileage out of Oprah and Good Morning America!

My roommate gave me this idea. Check out a book on cd from your local library and rip it to your mp3 player. Listening to a good book really helps out on the runs!

Hey.
I bring my ipod touch and listen to podcasts as well. Sometimes I'll listen to an audiobook. I tried Wait, wait don't tell me, but I have to be careful, its just too funny. I've nearly lost my balance because I was laughing.
