Hi Jessica, I am a mom like you. I have 3 kids. I am new to this site, just found it yesterday. I am also going to run my first 1/2 marathon in September. I too, have only ran a few 5k's.
What plan are you using? I bought the Jeff Galloway book, but haven't committed to any plan yet.
Good luck and keep up the good work.posted over 1 year ago | Report

I'm using Jeff Galloway's plan but kind of tweaked it a bit. i like that it's a long plan - so it will keep me focused and not slack off. I do want to run the entire half, so I'm trying to do his plan based on just running - so far, so good - but I have no idea what I'm doing really! :)
I ordered the book "The Marathon Method" too so we'll see what's in there.
Good luck to you too! If the half in May goes well - I am thinking about another in Sept?

Hi Robin,
I am a mom too and am training for a marathon May 1st. I love this site it does motivate me. The Jeff Galloway program is a great approach for keeping interest high, losing weight, increasing mileage without injury. I have been running for 20 years and still throw in his training technique. Good Luck!

Hi Jessica,
The most important run of the week when training for distance is the longer run. Up the mileage slowly each week and keep the other runs short and sweet.

Hi Jessica,
I have run about 8 half-marathons. I actually started this group, but I have been away for a while and need to work my way back myself. Half Marathons are a great distance. I only did 5K's and before making the leap to HM. As Jane said keep increasing the miles each week and make sure you get that long run in once a week. It will really make a difference and let you know how you are doing. Plans are good, but don't get worked up that you have to do exact runs on exact days. With life you will have to make some trade offs. Get's your miles in and on race day you will will be ready. Now I have to practice what I just preached.

hey! I've been training for my first half marathon (in late february!) and before that I had never even run in a race. I'm actually running my first 5k this weekend. I'm using jeff galloway too and I really love it. I do the run/walk tho (I have asthma and think it helps a lot). I started running as sort of a "screw you" to my health problems and it has turned into something I really look forward to now.

Thank you everyone for all the support! I am excited to have some friends on here that have already done a half or are actually training for one with me!
I'm on week 3 of the plan and the long run calls for 4 miles. I am kind of tweaking the plan to make it work for my days/ability - including a tempo run, long run, easy run and hill run. 1 of each per week. and then 2 cross training days (where I bike or do a DVD/strength train).
Really hoping that adding the hills and the tempo runs help me with my speed and endurance!

Hi Jessica! I just found this site...not sure how it took me so long to find.
I lost 35 lbs. in 2009 and have been running off and on since then...
I ran my first 1/2 in May last year, but stupidly only did 6 wks of training - still finished in just under 3 hours...but learned A LOT. My second 1/2 was last month and again, I still only did 6 wks of training - bad me! PR'ed by 2 minutes and finished in 2:57:00.I knew I could do better...and I have been running consistently since then. I just started on a 14-week 1/2 marathon training plan and so far so good. My third 1/2 will be in May.
I, like you, am not fast. I just really enjoy running...and I actually use the Galloway run/walk method and it seems to really work for me! My goal for my 1/2 in May is less than 2:45:00.
I requested you as a friend. Hopefully we can keep one another motivated :)
