Now to convince the wife I "need" to run in some 5Ks before then. :)

  • Martian Half Marathon on April 5. It's a goofy race with lots of inflateable martians lining the fairly boring route through a park. This will be my second time running it - close to home so convenient. The shirt is notorious for being really over the top. Completely covered. Last year's looked like a spaceman's top basically with hoses, belt, etc. This year's looks like there is an alien inside ... shirt appears to be ripped so that you see alien inside it. I've had coworkers tell me that they don't want to run with me when I wear last year's shirt. It is that bad.

www.martianmarathon.com check it out if you don't believe me.

Belle Isle New Year's Eve 4 Miler (4pm)

The race is May 18th and I plan to start training when I return from a ski trip to Colorado towards the end of January. If this goes well I'll turn my attention to a marathon maybe towards the end of 2009.

    Disney Princess Half March 8
Bridge the Gap to Health Half (with my sister, her first) May 9

Training mainly for the first one, second one is just because I'll be in Orlando for business anyway, and third is a trip home to visit family and run with my sister.

I'd love to run the FP...I love the medal with the cute little pig butt on the back. It's right around my birthday so maybe I could justify my Michigan family driving to Ohio for a race that way?

I am scared to death that I registered for it b/c I am unsure whether I can build up to that length in 4 months. I will be following a training plan to get me there. Still, I am a 3-4 mile runner and usually do 5ks so I am VERY intimidated!

  • in reply to what Chip P. said:If I have another race it keeps me focused. My sister worked all year for a marathon and then never ran again. I like running with the crowds even if I'm at the back of the pack :-)

I completely agree Chip! By no means am I an elite runner. I will always fall into the "slow and steady wins the race" class of runners. But I, too, love the feeling of a race and being in a crowd. I did 5ks almost every weekend or every other weekend in the spring, summer, and, fall of 2008 for that reason. I do not expect my time to get much faster but putting in a quick 3 miles with a crowd of people is So Fun! Who cares if we are in the middle to back of the pack. We are doing something healthy for ourselves.
I think "slow and steady" is what has motivated me to register for my 1st half m. Since I don't expect to ever be the speedest runner I figured I should shoot for building up my endurance threshold instead.
    Good Luck to You!

  • Don't be intimidated. I know hard to do. I was the same way. Last year I went from no running to my first half marathon in 56 days. I did it in 2:12. I think I could have gone faster. I had legs at the end of the race, but there were also a ton of runners and it was hard to break out. It was the Indianapolis Half that Doug is doing. Cool run but lots of people. I didn't want to push it on my first race of the year and hit the wall. Trust your training plan and you will do fine. Enjoy the journey.

My wife thinks that is disgusting that I could think about drinking so early in the morning. To me, gettting up at the butt-crack of dawn, and burning almost 2000 calories, it isn't that big of a deal. Good luck Paul. I am kind of hooked on the half now. I did my first one in Virginia Beach last August, (RnR also) and it was a lot of fun. I've done three more since then and have two more on deck. Get a couple of 11-12 milers in. I ran out of gas at the 10 mile mark because I was training with 8-10 miler long runs and it seemed like it wasn't enough.

This will be my 3rd half - but only time I've done one in the spring - hopefully the weather in March will be cooperative for getting the longer training runs in. I have done my other half races in the fall. Doing the race with a friend and we also signed up for a 5 miler March 8th - sponsored by a bar with beer following - how can can you not sign up for that?

then 4 on the 4th - 4 miler on July 4th in my home town - dd (age 10) to do it again too. Old Home days 5k - August (dd to do as well). Seacoast Half - Nov.09, Millenium Mile (1 miler downhill)- Dec 09 (whole family - I hope).

    January 25 - 1/2 marathon - ING Miami Marathon
March 15 - 10 mile run - Shamrock Run - Lake Worth, FL
    November 15 - 13.1 Ft. Lauderdale Marathon

  • Running the Country Music Half on April 24th. It will be my first Half marathon. I have never done an official race longer than a 5k. Had a 2 year layoff due to plantar facitis, but have been back at it since Oct. 2009. Currently working a 16 week training program.

I am signed up for two in Southern California for this summer/fall:

    September 5 - Disneyland Half-Marathon (with a cool 5th anniversary medal)
October 24 - Rock n Roll Los Angeles Half-Marathon (first annual)

I'm also considering doing the America's Finest City Half-Marathon in San Diego in August but I just had an appendectomy and the surgeon says I can't run for 4-6 more weeks. So we'll see if I will have enough time to train for it.

    Good luck everyone!

  • My first HM is the LA Rock & Roll 1/2 Marathon in October. Here's the dailymile event page: http://www.dailymile.com/events/11571-rock-n-roll-los-angeles-half-marathon. Hoping to finish in under 2 hrs. I'm not that fast yet, but I'm improving, and still have some time!

  • One of my favorites that is coming up in May is the Marine Corps Half Marathon in Fredericksburg, VA. Anyone else running? I have ran 3 full Marine Corps Marathons and 2 Marine Corps Half Marathons . . I can't wait for this half in 2011. I'm really shooting for 2 hrs but that a high standard for me, but it's worth a shot.
www.marinemarathon.com has lots of races going on at the Quantico Marine Base. I am running the 8k on the 26th of March . . . come join me..drop a line !
