Hi, I'm doing my first half marathon (Liverpool) on March 28, which'll be my first race ever! I'm still pretty new to even being fit, having started cycling last summer (5 years after quitting smoking) and I've been running regularly since November.
I'm moderately terrified about the half marathon having got my "big run" up to about 10k but I'm on track I think. Training in general is ok, managing a couple of reasonable runs a week at least, although I joined the local gym so I'm able to run indoors when it's freezing and blowing a gale outside:)
Motivation is pretty easy, I've just told EVERYONE I know. Most of them remember me smoking two packets a day so they're really encouraging and a bunch of them are coming out to cheer me on which helps to get me off the couch when I'd rather just watch TV!

I'm doing my half in Chicago. I plan on doing a 10k a month before that, to give myself a feel for it (I've only done a 5k before). I'm pretty new to running, I've been working out pretty consistently for a couple years, but just started running in November. Once I started, I just felt the need to keep getting better and going farther.
For me, one of my best motivator is seeing people rack up the miles on here. It almost a feeling of, "if they can run 20 miles in one day, I can surely run 6".
Ben, congrats on quitting smoking, that's terrific!
Terry, I also prefer to run easy, as well. Right now, I'm more worried about getting it done. When I have more experience, I will think about increasing my speed.posted over 3 years ago | Report

I'm running my first half in May- I'm a newbie and quite slow- but just focused on finishing and no time goals for my first. I'd just like to finish before they close the course!
I run as a mentor with a group of teenagers- it's keeping me focused. There are other adult mentors of various fitness levels- everyone is really encouraging. Used to prefer to workout alone, but never stuck with it before. Knowing there are people who will wonder where I am if I miss a training run and will harass me about it helps me stay motivated.
Good luck to everyone on their first half! If I don't require medical attention after this one- long-term goal is a marathon in November. Happy running!posted over 3 years ago | Report

hey
I did my first half marathon 2 years ago, and have been on and off running since. training for another now in april.
I only trained up to 8 miles last time and got around in 2:10. I think weekly mileage helped rather than long runs, as was panicking i wouldn't do it with not much training time. The crowds and atmosphere also helped and it wasn't as hard as I thought. Hope this helpsposted over 3 years ago | Report

I am running my first 1/2 in April. I started running just to get in shape and hopefully lose some weight. My husband (surprisingly) has been pretty motivational. I have told a lot of people that I am training for this, so that is also a motivator. I was pretty concerned when I first decided to do this, as I had never run more than 3 miles before. I am up to 6 miles, and they haven't been as hard as I thought they would. We'll see how it goes as they keep adding up!

I am running my first half at the end of April. I'm relatively new to running. I started last spring and ran a few 5Ks, but then decided to shoot for bigger goals and signed up to train with our local Fleet Feet for a 12K (Sept '09). I'm not going to lie....the 12K was a tough hilly course and toward the end I kept thinking I'd never run again, but here I am....registered for a half marathon!!!
This time I'm training on my own using a training plan I got off of the web along with using dailymile.com which has definitely helped....it keeps me honest in my training. When you have those days when you just don't feel like working out....you now know that if you don't log a workout not only will you know....but everyone who follows you will also know. =)
Good luck with your races everyone!!!

March 28 is my first mini-marathon (15K), which will help me train for the Flying Pig Half-Marathon in Cincinnati in May. The farther I've ever ran was 4 miles, so I've got my 2-month training schedule.
My motivation is my husband. He has been a runner since middle school and helps me to push through the pain.
My current challenges are the snow and really cold weather!

I am running my first half March 6th. I started running in September. Completed 3 5k's and one 10k since then. Looking forward to the half. Trying to have a long run(8-12 miles), speed workout(5-7 miles), and a tempo run(5-7miles) per week. Sometimes it all fits into a week and sometimes it doesn't. Good luck with your half! Have fun training!

I am training for my first half...it will be in May, LOL I am a little behind but I through ice skating in to the mix hoping it might just give me that extra mile :)...I know when I trained for my 10K, I wasn't a running, what helped my A LOT was going on a rowing machine, actuallly erg machine not the weight machine, and I trained with that half the time and it is more intense then running :)
Good Luck! I will be routing for you :)posted over 3 years ago | Report

Hi! I'm running my first marathon in early June. I must be crazy because I am taking the LSAT the very next day. I am hoping that the stress of both will outweigh each other... Ha ha!
I have trained for marathons in the past only to get seriously injured and laid off for months at a time. With a 1/2 as my goal, I'm planning on finishing this training injury free!

I'm doing my first half in June as well. Training is going well. I'm doing this with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program so I am also having to fundraise. That is more stressful than training. I ran a 5k yesterday and did pretty well. I have a 10k in a coupl weeks then a 10 miler a couple of weeks after that. I am my motivation because I am doing this for me to prove to myself that I can. Does that make sense?

I'm training for my first half-marathon too (May 22, Brooklyn 1/2). I've only raced a 5k before. I saw this simplified training program on Active.com...
Half-Marathon and Marathon Five runs per week:
Day 1: Rest or cross-train
Day 2: 2-mile warm-up; 20 min. continuous @ half-marathon pace (for half-marathon, add 10-min. jog and 1600 meters @ 10-K pace); 1- to 2-mile cooldown
Day 3: Run 30 to 60 min. at conversational pace
Day 4: Run 35 to 60 min.; start at conversational pace. For half-marathon, run last 20 min. 45 sec./mile slower than half-marathon pace. For marathon, do last 30 min. at marathon pace.
Day 5: Rest or cross-train
Day 6: Run 30 to 50 min., followed by 8 x 100-meter strides
Day 7: Run for 75 to 100 percent of predicted race finish time at conversational paceKEY:
Cross-Train Aerobic activities, such as cycling or stairclimbing, at easy effort OR strength/flexibility work, such as yoga or Pilates
Strides Short, fast runs at the pace you could hold for one to two minutes
Predicted Times Instead of a mileage goal, practice running for a certain amount of time. If your predicted half-marathon time is two hours, you'd do your distance run that week at 90 minutes to two hours.

Hi all,
I'm also running my first 1/2 in June. The See Jane Run in Alameda, CA. I'm new to running (September 09) and a little terrified. I've only done a 5K and that was in November and my time was pretty bad. I'm up to about 8.5 miles but still nervous I won't be able to do 13 without walking.
Does anyone have links to good training guides?

I'm running my first half in June, the Covered Bridges half up in Vermont. http://www.cbhm.com/site56.aspx
I've run a 10k before and keep pretty active with cycling everyday and running two to three times a week, but now I've stepped it up a bit and am using Hal Hidgon's half training guide for novices. http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm
I like to ride my bike to work daily instead of taking the train. It's really hard to stop cycling as much though - it's great for cross training but for running days it's utterly brutal.
Good luck everyone!

My First Half Marathon will be in Septemeber in Virginia Beach, figured might as well travel and have fun as it will be a race to never forget. As far as motivation goes? Well I don't really have any...that's why a friend suggested I join this site and that way I can see how many miles I am putting in and well, it would be bad to lie on a public forum as such. Also what keeps me motivated is that I have already registered for the race and as we all know, registration fees are not cheap! Don't want to lose out on the money!

I just registered for my first half marathon 2 days ago. It'll be in Philladelphia this Nov. 21.
A little nervous but excited as well. Ran my first 7 miles this morning. My first races ever will be a 5K on Apr. 18 and a 5M on Apr. 25. I started to run last October at the age 44. I hope to finish my first 1/2 at sub-2, but will be happy just to finish.I learned to mix my runs. Base on Wed. tempo on Fri. and a long run on Sun. I'll be adding speedwork on Tue. with one or two recovery and easy runs in between.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I feel confident that I'll have enough time to train.

Corey, I think if you walk 1 min after 5 miles, 2 mins after 10 you'll be ok. The last 3 wil be easy. You may even be able to slow jog for a min or two. Never underestimate yorself. I did this morning. I was shooting for my first ever 6 mile run and ran 7. I probably could have done 8, but it started getting scary and strange. Hey, I was happy to run my first 3 a month ago and my first 5 on March 21.
You "May" go all the way. Don't do a very long run a week before. Apperently that 8 miler set up a tiring 10.

I had registered for my first half in September in Philly (Rock 'n' Roll half), but decided I wanted to do one before that ... so my brother got me to sign up for the 1/2 Sauer & 1/2 Krauet Half in Wyomissing PA in June. For the June one my only goal is to finish it. I'd be happy with 3hours 30 minutes..a finish is a finish. I'll set a time based goal for Philly based on the results of my first half.
I've been running for about 3 years now...I've only viewed it as a leisurely activity, running/jogging 3-4 days a week between 2 and 4 miles.
Best of luck to all the other first time halfers!

I am running my first half in Sept. (the Rock N Roll half in VA Beach). I ran my first 5k in November and am so excited for the half! I had a lull in my training from Jan thru March so I feel like I am starting all over now. I trained for the 5k using C25k and I can say it is much better starting out going 1.5 and 2 miles instead of 60 sec. intervals. I am SO GRATEFUL for C25k and those first 60 sec of jogging. It changed my life!

Glad to find a good group of beginning runners! I've been a serious cyclist for a few years, but never got into running until now. I'm running the Rock n' Roll Half in August in Chicago. I've been using the C25K podcasts which are pretty fun, but am outgrowing them now - which is awesome! I'm following Hal Higdon's training schedule for a half-marathon for novices (http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm), and so far it's going well...keeping to the schedule, and walking for 30sec-1min when I need to while training, I haven't been sore yet while training. And, I'm beginning to even enjoy my runs (which I was definitely dubious about at the start).

I am wanting to do a half, don't really have one planned just yet other than one in October which is a ways away! I wanted to find one this spring to do but just didn't get there. I have only been running since summer '09, well, I used to jog all the time but quit, got older, lazier, fatter and then I was determined to get in shape and started a walk/jog thing on my treadmill then I found out about a local 5k last Sept. and set my goals on that....then did 2 more....got addicted! This year I have ran a 10k and a 5k and have a bunch more 5k's upcoming locally and another 10k that isn't too far of a drive for me so I won't have to get a hotel. I want to travel to these, but right now our family summer plans are so up in the air, I don't want to spend a bunch of money on hotels for races and then wish I wouldn't have come summer vacation! Ya know what I mean?!

I am training for my first 1/2 in San Diego this June. I was nervous at first that injury from overtraining would set me back but so far all is good! I accomplished 9 miles on Sunday and will shoot for 10 this Saturday. I do a hill run and a sprint run each week. In between running days I am spinning and strength training. I would like to add swimming to my routine also but I have a hard time fitting it in the schedule. I have been a 5k runner for the past 3 years or so and have loved every minute! With careful, intentional effort it will be exciting to see just how far I can go. If somebody had asked me 10 years ago if I would ever be able to run a half marathon, the answer would've been a flat out NO! Life is great! Good luck in your training!!!

Training is going fine. My long runs are up to 15 miles. I do intervals and a tempo run once a week to try and build some speed.

My first half is in six days, in Sydney. Three months ago I found it difficult to run 3km. since then I signed up with a running coach and bought a Garmin, both have enabled me to make great improvements.
I've run some 3, 4, 5k races but the furthest distance I've run continuously has been 8.5k, which was last Friday.

I'm on my second week of my first half marathon training. I'm doing a two month training and before I started it I had to be able to run 3-4 miles easily. I really like it because it incorporates 50 minutes of cardio exercise into the training to about once a week so I can mix it up instead of always running. I found the first week to be easy and enjoyable but this second week is hitting me like a brick wall. My body is recovering and tired from all these workouts and I have such bad blisters on my feet is painful. I need to be stronger mentally.

I am training for my first half marathon. i am doing mine in Oct. in Detroit. I have never really been a runner, and i just decided at the beginning of this year that i was going to make it my goal to run a half marathon. I started off running 1 mile which was a big accomplishment for me, but i just did my first 5K last weekend and this weekend i ran 3.5miles so i am getting there. At the moment my training is not going so hot, and I'm a bit discouraged. I started having some right knee pain a couple weeks ago, and was diagnosed with ITBS. It's not too bad, and I'm working on strengthening my hips and improving my form to correct the problem, but meanwhile my left calf/achilles/heel has started giving me trouble. So my mileage is not nearly where I want it to be, and though I know I've got plenty of time (October), it still has me feeling less confident about being able to make this happen the way I want it to.

Yes, first ever coming up in the fall. Following the training program on the race website, but finding that running six days a week is not going to work out for me. I also do lots of cycling, aiming for 75 miles a week and doing 50 mile race/rides. So, time and fatigue are of great concern.
I spoke to a marathoner yesterday who recommended the Jeff Galloway method of running three times a week (two shorts and one long). Going to try that next week.

I have never run a race longer than 5 miles, and I am not a fast runner. I am concerned that I will not be able to keep my motivation up for the next three months in order to get ready. I am going to work with a nutritionist as well, to make sure that I am eating the right foods to keep my energy and vitamin levels up (something I have trouble with). I actually started training for a full marathon before I ran my first half! By that point, I was doing close to 20 miles for my long run, so 13.1 wasn't bad at all. My advice would be to log lots and lots of miles, even if you have to run them slowly. You want to get used to being on your feet for a couple hours.

Already posted this to my profile, but thought this group would be a good source of advice, as well. Anyone in the same boat? Would love to hear your thoughts.
Due to injuries, most notably ITBS, I haven't stuck to anything like my original half marathon training plan. With less than 10 weeks to go, and my longest recent runs only 6 miles or less, I'm concerned. I'm ready to let go of my time goal, but afraid my ego will cause me to run harder than I should and hurt myself. Should I just reschedule for another race a few months later? I doubt I will, but would love some advice.

I've never been athletic and although I am tall and slim, I'm glad to finally get in shape. Absolutely hooked and it has been torture not being able to run for the past 6+ months - make that foam roller your best friend people!!
