Brian - my suggestion would actually be the Vermont 50. It will be my first 50 miler as well. From everything I've read and heard, it's a fantastic race.

I did the Vermont 50 last year, it was my 1st ultra. A great race for sure, perfect time of year in northern New England. Well organized, awesome volunteers, the stations were a plenty and always fully stocked. The only potential downside is that this is also a 50 mile trail bike race. I was a bit concerned with that on some of the single track trails, but all of the bikers were courteous. They start before the runners, but inevitable you catch up to a few.
It's hilly (it is Vermont after all) but it's not technical running. You need to train on hills for sure. If you are looking for a flatter race, or on not on trails you should look around a bit more.
I think I might do it again this year. Either the 50 mile or 50K depending on the fall marathon schedule. Anyway, if you decide to do it, get in touch and Good luck!

Once you complete this year's goal of a 50 mile run....Next year you could run the Avalon 50 which is held on Catalina Island in California. It's beautiful! check it out- http://www.avalon50.com/

Take a trip to Utah and do the MAS 50. I plan on doing it this fall because it seems as difficult as they come. I figure start at the top and all the other 50 milers will not be intimidating. Also the verity of area it runs through is incomparable. It runs through alpine meadows around 12,000 foot peaks and down into the red rock desert of Moab Utah. It can't get better, maybe easier.

MAS 50... I've read about this. It sounds great, but very intimidating! I would be very interested in hearing about how you plan on training for it.

TO train I do most all my long runs in the mountains at 7000 feet and above and all of my runs, long or short are up and down hills the steeper the better and I can't worry about my pace as much. I am up to running 7 miles in my Vibrams but the pads of my feet get sore and I haven't been able to go farther yet; but I think they help me a lot.

The North Face has a good 50 miler in September in Washington DC that may interst you. I ran it in 2009 and thought it was well roganized, well supported, and challenging. I may not have time to run it in 2010, but I would recommend it.

The Summer 100 is a great race in Lockport, NY. Runs along the Erie Canal towpath. Flat course. This will also be my first ultra.
