Challenges lack integration with DM

posted over 1 year ago | Report

My apologies if this has been mentioned before. I love DM and the challenges have so much potential but they fall short in implementation. I had hoped that I would see improvements with the redesign of the page but they haven't really changed at all.

The biggest problem I see with challenges is they feel like a totally separate deal from the rest of the DM web site. When you join a challenge, nobody on DM knows but you unless you post something somewhere. When you complete a challenge, nobody on DM knows but you and only if you take the time to regularly go check on your status. As a motivating tool I don't really feel motivated to participate in challenges.

I do have a few suggestions and they should all be easy to implement (coming from a developers perspective). The profile page should list active challenges you started or are participating in along with your current rank in that challenge.

When you join a challenge a post should be added to your activity feed that includes a link to the challenge. It's more important to me that my friend on DM know I'm doing a challenge rather than my friends on Twitter and Facebook.

It's equally important that an activity post get added to my feed when I complete a challenge too. An email notification for such an event would also be a welcome option as well.

Finally, a list of your current challenge standings in the weekly status update email would also be grand.

In short, it would be nice if challenges existed anywhere outside of the challenge tab on the web site. Thanks.

  • I agree! I would like to see current and past challenges on my friends profiles, as well as on my profile.

I see that you posted this 3 months ago, and obviously nothing has been done about it. So DailyMile programmers, can you tell us if this is somehting you can do?

  • I'm glad I'm not alone in my thinking here. I've got my fingers crossed because DM is still the best fitness community I've found yet and I have tried quite a few. :)

  • I agree that there is a lot of potential with the challenges and your suggestions would be well advised. I would add that I have not found a multi-sport challenge that actually counts anything but overall miles. Seems like if the idea is to do a Iron distance in three separate disciplines, then it would stop counting my cycling miles after 112 and that it would not count my elliptical miles at all.

  • I came across another one today. Challenges that you "complete" but have no end date stay on your list. If you leave the challenge to clean up your challenge list, you lose your results for the challenge. There should be an option to be "done" with a challenge once you complete it without leaving the challenge regardless of it's active state.

In fact if the list of challenges was divided into those you have not completed and those you have, this wouldn't even be an issue.

  • Thanks for the feedback! We hope to integrate challenges better into dailymile very soon.

  • As a web developer and keen cyclist I have noted three 'bugs' with how challenges are managed which I think make the site very poor and could be easily fixed by any half-decent developer.

    1. Riders who have rode 151 km are placed higher that riders who have rode 145 miles. Shouldn’t the leader board differentiate between the two units of measure and report acutely?

    2. Running entries and distances appear in cycling challenges.

    3. It’s annoying that you have to join a challenge before you log training details. Challenges have date periods and all training entries have a date stamp, surely they can ensure that challenge entries can be picked up automatically
