I think it depends on the group doing the races and the timing. In Arizona, there's a group called the Arizona Road Racers that puts on a lot of races. They own their own ChampionChip timing system, which they use at all their races. You can buy a personal chip for them for around $30, and then you get a $1 or $2 discount on each race you run with your own chip. I don't know if other clubs do this, it probably really varies by group.

most races are converting to using a disposable band for your shoe laces.so probably wont be worth buying one anymore.
