A lot of ultra races give out belt buckles. I always thought it was pretty cool because you could wear them, instead of tossing in your closet somewhere.

I once volunteered at a race called Mad Dog (25k and 50k). I don't know if the race director had these custom made or if he found a company that sold them (more likely), but he had "Mad Dog" brand hot sauce, bbq sauce, and spicy mustard sauce for all the finishers and volunteers. Something different and useful too!

Hi Marty, Thanks for asking.
I've started another discussion around this asking people to post interesting awards.
http://www.dailymile.com/forums/race-resources/topics/236-finishing-medals-awardsSomething that has a local feel, possibly hand crafted are always cool things to receive. One of my first age group awards I won was from a race in Georgetown, CO. The medals were really big gold panning pans with little mountain scenes in there on a backdrop of polished rock. It is a conversation piece for sure.
Ill have to go take a photo :)
