What types of running races have been successful in metro area with population of 500,000?

I am hoping to put on a fundraiser race for the first time in a community with a population of about 500,000. What themes, distances, features, have made events successful in similar communities?

  5ks will always attract a crowd. They are short so no one needs to pick them out months in advance to train for. Half Marathons if they are well advertised will do the same. Small amount of prize money or good stuff in the bag you get (i.e t-shirts, gels, socks, coupons, power bars).
