  • Heather, I just got some about a week and a half ago. I really like them because they don't really have a taste, which means you can add them to anything, and I swear I feel less hungry on the days I eat some. So far, I've only tried them in yogurt and smoothies, and sprinkled them over chicken before baking. You really can't beat the nutrition that is packed into those little tiny things!!

  • This makes me thing of the Rugrats episode where Chucky swallowed a watermelon seed and it grew in his stomach. You are all going to have green, furry tummys. Then you're going to start st st st studdering when you talk. ;)

  • Chia Seeds are awesome!!! I use them in a lot of different things, on toast with almond butter, in yogurt and smoothies, in oatmeal, or I will make chia frescas (google it, lots of recipes out there) Those little tiny seeds have so much nutrition packed into them, I highly recommend trying them. I buy mine at Wild Oats, not sure if you have that store in your area, but you may have something similar (natural, organic food store)

  • Hi, I just got turned on to chia seeds and love them because of the energy they have given me and because it eliminated the joint inflamation I was experiencing from working out. I am now an independent distributor for Mila by Lifemax which is the chia seed produced by Dr. Wayne Coates who studied the Tarahumara Indians in Copper Canyon. In fact, Dr. Coates is quoted in the Jan 2010 issue of Oprah Magazine about chia. Not all chia seeds are created the same, nor do they have the same nutritional value, and he has studied this seed for the last 18 years to create the most nutritious and perfect seed. You can learn more about it at www.LiveFit.lifemax.net. If anyone is interested please don't hesitate to contact me.
In addition, Mila has 8 times more Omega-3 than salmon, it's gluten-free and a natural whole food. With that it also helps with heart health and many other things! Many of my friends and some of my family members are trying it and we are seeing many different benefits depending upon the individual. Thanks and everyone have a wonderful holiday.

  • I drink about 12oz of water with about 2 teaspoons of chia seed in it and sometimes some BCAA's an hour or so before my long runs. I don't know about appetite suppression but I haven't felt tired or low energy during a long run since!
I love me some Ch Ch Ch Chia!

  • how many weight watchers points or calories are in chia seeds and do you have to crush them to get the benifit of their nutritional value?

  • I have just started using these - I love them - looking forward to making a chia energy gel with honey/maple syrup and a shot of espresso - my variation of "Danny's Elixir" (original recipe from Danny Dryer).

  • I use Chia in my long run refueling routine.

    1 old pint water bottle:

1 - 1 1/2 carrot juice (made from a vitamix, whole carrots plus water)
1/8 - 1/4 salt (depending on temps and expected sweat level)
    2 Tablespoons Agave syrup
    Juice from 1 lime
2-3 Tablespoons chia (more for more gel and cals)

Carrot juice for the potassium and of course salt, and the mixture gels very well. I can take a big gulp from it every 30 minutes and it works out to about 200 calories per hour. And of course I get my salts back in too. It's worked on all of my long runs from 12-20 with excellent results.

Super low glycemic index also and just doggon good for you.

Take THAT heed... hehe I don't need your stinkin gels ;p

  • Your welcome Margaret. You can't get more natureal than this recipe. GL on your runs! (don't forget to adjust the salt amount with how hot it is outside, you don't want to over do it)

  • I'm a recent chia addict. One of my favorite ways to wake up in the morning is with a glass of pomegranate kefir (it's like liquid yogurt) mixed with 1 tbsp of chia seeds. The seeds add a wonderful texture to the drink and give you something to crunch on.

  • My understanding of the benefit of chia is they absorb water and slow your digestion. The net result is you stay hydrated better and get more energy out of the food you eat. I've been eating them daily in my morning oatmeal and again at lunch with yogurt. Helps maintain more even blood sugar levels. I haven't eaten any as a Gu replacement during runs, but I did have them as part of my morning schedule before my race. Amazon has good prices for 1lb and 5lb bags.

  • I have lost nearly 40 pounds over 4 months. Not only appetite suppression, but also carb craving elimination.

Additionally, cholesterol went down 30 points.

  • where does one find chia seeds?

  • Amazon has good prices ($20ish for a 5 lbs bag). They tend to be PRICY though if you go to your local store, at least in my experience.

  • I have found mine in grocery stores in the natural health food section or in health food stores when I was up north. Down here I was happy to still be able to find them. I had brought bags of chia and quinoa down here with me. Love both. . I found the chia seeds to be less expensive than the ground chia but my trainer had told me she felt the ground better re getting the maximum nutrition from themr and I followed what she does which is buy the seeds and grind them in a little coffee grinder I bought just for that purpose.

  • I know there is a lot of hype surrounding chia seeds these days, especially since Christopher McDougall (author of Born to Run) made mention that the Tarahumara Indians of Copper Canyon, Mexico supposedly use them when the run (the chia fresca drink everyone is talking about). I've been down to Copper Canyon three times to run in the race McDougall describes in the book and I never once saw a chia seed or any of the runners drinking chia fresca. Instead, the Tarahumaras fueled themselves exclusively on fruit (bananas, oranges, grapefruit) and pinole (a roasted, ground up cornmeal mixed with sugar). It seems the runners tend towards naturally high carbohydrate sources, not the higher fat of chia seeds (50% calorically).

I've tried using a chia seed paste as fuel while running, but it never really sat well with me. Kind of made my stomach hurt and it felt like it was clogging up my digestion. I have a few pounds of chia seeds lying around, but I'm never that inclined to make up a batch and just go to town. They aren't very appealing as a food source by themselves (which I guess is the reason for using some type of refined sweetener).

I'm also really turned off by all of the new MLM companies popping up trying to sell chia seeds as the next miracle superfood of the "ancient Aztecs". Does anyone really believe this stuff? Some companies are asking $55 a pound!

  • I cannot believe I haven't even heard of chia seeds. If I could run out to a health store this minute and buy some I would. It'll have to wait 'til the morning.

  • Unlike flax, you don't have to crush chia seeds to get the benefit.
