Gluten and/or wheat free - not celiac

posted about 1 year ago | Report

I'm trying to figure out what some of the causes for my digestive issues are. I know that dairy is an issue for me, so I avoid it. I was dairy free/casein free while nursing an allergic baby and felt pretty good on it. I still deal with a lot of bloating, gas and constipation and I find when I eat things like pasta, pretzals, bagels...I feel awful - actually gaining up to 5 lbs of bloat - The past few days, I've been avoiding most gluten and wheat - and feeling significantly better...flat belly, normal bm's...

Any others out there with similar issues? I've been tested twice for celiac and had negative tests, which I'm thrilled about and I don't have any other issues other than the digestive ones I listed above...

Thanks in advance!!

  • I have been off of grains, legumes, and dairy for over 90 days now and feel great. The wheat belly as it is called is gone. An interesting read on the effects of grains, legumes, and dairy on the body is a book by Robb Wolf titled The Paleo Solution.

Since cutting out those foods, I have better runs, better recovery, and the awful feeling after meals is gone.

  • I found out I was gluten intolerant... same symptoms as you. Once I stopped gluten I was amazed after about 10 days what I felt like. I would do all the bloating and then have this crash where I could NOT stay awake. Not sure where you are in the country but there are many gluten free products out there now. I love the rice but needs time (90 min to cook) but it is very good. You will have to play around with the pastas you like- they differ a bit to me in taste and texture. If you have the breads or bagels-- make sure you toast them. I have not been able to find one I like cold lol... but toasted changes them and makes them alright. I have a Giant grocery store here that has an entire front section of the store dedicated to gluten free and organic... I like it because it is much cheaper than going to "wegmans" or "whole foods" ugh. Ask some of your local grocers if they carry any gluten free products or if they would think of starting to carry them...you would be surprised at what they can do. Hope that is at least a little helpful

  • im in the same situation as you. about a year ago i decided to do a sort of "cleanse" in my own way for a couple weeks, i totally eliminated dairy, gluten, caffiene and sugar. i felt incredible. i tried to stick with it but slowly started adding those things back into my diet, i felt the impact immediatley. since then i've become almost completely intolerant to lactose and anytime i have gluten i feel bloated, anxious, sleepy and hazy. i stay away from lactose and gluten at all costs and i recommend it. i get really good gluten-free products from the store, my gluten-free spaghetti is my favorite. i also try and find alternatives that are probably better for me anyway. i'm going to be bringing all this up with my doctor soon, but as an athlete, i feel 100x better when i don't eat lactose or gluten (caffeine however i can't seem to quit ;) ) i'll add you as a friend, i'd love to swap recepies and such!

  • I am gluten free and not celiac -- I had bloating and digestive issues whenever I ate wheat -- but now I eat no bread or pasta. It's better that way for me. Here's a good site: http://www.wheatbellyblog.com/

I think some people are "sensitive" to gluten without being celiac.
