Is anyone aware of a site like dailymile for cooking and nutrition?

asked about 3 years ago | Report

Figured I'd ask this group.

I'm not looking for a group of cooking enthusiasts or anything about gourmet. I'm hoping there's a site that helps people with discipline in getting the right nutrients and committing to cooking on a regular basis. As a NYer, I know I'm not alone in my habits of ordering food in more than I should... :-)

Update:
Thanks for the responses so far! I took a look at these sites, and they seem geared towards weight loss and/or general fitness. I wonder if there's anything that focuses on food and cooking as a discipline. I'm personally not looking to lose weight, and I am very happy using dailymile for fitness. Does anyone else think they'd find value in a sharable log of cooking activities, perhaps with a focus on getting the right nutrients (for an athlete or for general health) in any given day?

  • The free version of FitDay (www.fitday.com) has a good online food diary, which includes nutrients as well as calories. Neat graphs and stuff. The $$ version may include more features that could fit the needs you have in mind. Check it out.

  • I don't think this is what you're looking for either, but http://www.thedailyplate.com/ is good for monitoring what you eat. Although I don't use the site anymore, as the Livestrong iphone app is powered by it and has been great for monitoring what I eat during the day.

  • Hey Ruth -

I'd definitely be interested in a sharable log of cooking activities. I use epicurious.com pretty regularly to find recipes and get meal ideas. They do have forums there (http://www.epicurious.com/community/forums) and the ability to share recipes, save ideas, etc. But I don't think the functionality is as robust as something you're talking about.

I just checked out http://sparkpeople.com/ and it's pretty stellar - thanks for the link!

  • If you're looking for a way to simply eat better, I'd highly suggest keeping a food journal for a week, writing down everything you eat and the time you eat it.

Then go down the list and figure out what your body really needs and what it doesn't, cut out the crap and start to enter in the good stuff. I do this all in my head, and search out foods to eat based on what my body needs. Right now I'm low fat, medium protein, medium to high carbs and medium sugars (fruits) as I'm losing weight and for me, that's what has worked. I'm a pretty big fan of listening to your body and have really stopped eating so much for pleasure as for fuel.. but I do really enjoy the foods I eat now.

  • We just started a group called the "Healthy Eating Initiative" over at JustFinish.com, http://www.justfinish.com/group/healthyeatinginitiative, to help people stay on track with their nutrition & eating habits. It also provides healthy cooking/food preparation tips as well. You're welcome to join us there!

Mark Dilworth, a fitness professional, will be providing FREE nutrition assessments & meal plans for people who join the group!

Also, if you're looking for more tips or motivation, I've also got two blogs which talk a lot about the above issues, http://seecoreyrun.blogspot.com (which has a recipe series entitled "Simple Healthy Meals" for easy, nutritious meal ideas) & http://cookingwithcorey.blogspot.com (which is a repository of tasty AND healthy recipes & also provides healthy cooking tips as well).

    Hope this helps!

  • This might be a little more work than you're looking for, but you might consider starting up a food blog or tumblr account. Lots of people have food blogs in which they take pictures of their meals and post them. They're a lot more fascinating than you'd think! As a vegan, I love finding vegan cooking blogs and drooling at the awesome pictures. They definitely inspire me to try new recipes and spend more time in the kitchen.

  • If you're looking for recipes, I like Eat Better America: http://www.eatbetteramerica.com/default.aspx

I've tried quite a few recipes and they're pretty good. Plus, they have a section called "healthified" where they take classic or favorite recipes and make them healthier.

  • I'm a bit fan of Epicurious nad Allrecipes.com. They're both sites that have excellent cooking resources and personalizable collections of recipes. Epicurious also offers a forum as previously mentioned. I'm not aware of anything exactly like DM though for cooking. It would be an interesting concept though! Good luck with your search.
