There's been some research into this. For regular workouts, I don't expect that it matters much. Your fruit smoothie with a little protein actually sounds perfect, and it's real food rather than powder from a pouch.
For extreme depletion exercises. i.e. you run until you've depleted your glycogen stores (like, 15-18 miles), the first rule is to eat within 20 min of stopping exercise. Secondly, eat something easily digestible. Thirdly, it should be a balance of 70% Carb and 30% protein. Doesn't need to be exact, but about that ratio. Too much protein (or fat) and it slows the digestion so you don't restore your muscles when they're most ready for it. Also, many of the 'healthy' natural foods have fiber and good stuff in them, all which will slow down the absorption. Great for general health, but not what you want right after exercise.
There are plenty of powders, beans, blocks, shots, balls, that will all do the trick. You can find something you really like (try the Cliff shots- yum), or just eat real food (a banana and non-fat yogurt seems to work for me).
You're on the right track. Aspartame has no place in an athlete's diet.

Water. Maybe with a pinch of salt. I wouldn't touch whey with a 10 foot pole.

I've personally stuck with a couple of glasses of whole chocolate milk or a bottle of Propel. Never got into the whole protein drink deal.

well a post drink for running is gonna be WAY diiferent then for weight lifting, and the debate for what is good as a post workout drink is never ending! everyone including trainers and nutritionist will all disagree with each other. i weight lift, bike, and do MMA style training (for exercise, not for sport) and i will drink and eat different things for each workout type. to be simple and safe, a fruit smoothie with protien and some BCAA's would be most affective. just watch the sugar content and cals. since protien and simple carbs(like in fruits) are statistically supposed to be the best for post workout, sticking with that would help......but the best choice would be to eat a healthy meal, nothing beats real food, and sleep

Whey protein, a little coffee and Nuun tablets all in a Nalgene of water. Yummy! Eat a little carb with this... or add some sugar to the mixture. Otherwise, chocolate milk.
