Avid runners! Whats your diet consist of?

asked over 2 years ago | Report

Don't know why I've never asked. And I am always wondering what I should eat!

What do you eat? What do you NOT eat. And what do you indulge in every once in a while? I prefer specifics rather than just "I eat lots of carbohydrates!"

I eat a vegan diet-no animal products at all. I eat a lot of fruit, vegetables, grains (whole, unprocessed), beans, and some seitan/tofu/tempeh-but I don't eat that everyday. I try not to eat too many processed foods like bread and stuff, but I love my sprouted grain english muffin with almond butter for breakfast, and I adore vegan pizza. Every now and then I'll have dessert, but since I've stopped eating a lot of added sugar, I don't crave it as much. I also have a glass or two of wine on occasion.
Pre race/long run dinner-vegan pizza (this is when I will treat myself to the more processed carbs, and they are bland and don't upset my stomach).
Pre race/long run breakfast- over 10 miles I eat the english muffin and a banana and one cup of coffee. Over 18 miles, I'll also eat some Luna Moons during the run.
    Post race: veggie burrito.

I run 40-50 miles/week and feel pretty good eating this way! I just never really liked meat and dairy and eggs weren't hard to give up. However, I believe that almost anything is okay in moderation.

  • Anything I want, as much as I want, whenever I want. I love Hamburgers, BBQ, Pizza, Mexican, and Donuts. I make sure I have these items at least once or twice per week.

Best Hamburgers are Ann's Snack Bar http://bit.ly/1oLdLx and Georges http://bit.ly/4p5T79. Best BBQ is Fox Bros http://bit.ly/12C7Ns .

Running allows me to consume foods I enjoy. I control my weight by running more miles or eating less food. Running 30 miles a week allows me to eat as much as I desire.

  • I'm more like Don S. I pretty eat what I want; especially when I'm in training for a race or my mileage is higher. The only things I stay away from are items that are extremely high in saturated fats, such as fast food. (BK, McDonalds etc) I love pizza but mostly try to each alot of chicken, turkey burger and vegatables. I'm also a sucker for breakfest....eggs, pancakes, sausage...I love it all!!

For snacks, I'm a mixed nut fiend. You have to watch the added sodium though. I also love apples. (you can't go wrong with fruits or vegatables)

  • Got the "pescetarian" diet going. Plant based but we eat fish, eggs and some dairy as well. I can basically eat as much plant based as I care to and still get plenty of carbs, proteins, minerals and so on. Takes some getting used to, but it's pretty darn delicious!!

  • I run EARLY in the a.m., so I don't eat before a run unless I'm going more than two hours, or so.

B'fast: BIG bowl of granola (Bare Naked, Back to Nature, Kashi U, Baker's) with banana & 1% milk; or oatmeal with added nuts/berries.
    Mid-morning: Clif Bar or Baker's B'fast Cookie (about 250 - 275 cal)
Lunch: turkey/cheese sandwich (whole grain bread, of course!), Trisquits, Apple
Mid-afternoon (if I'm hungry): apple, more trisquits, nuts
Dinner: WHATEVER I WANT! and Red Wine!

I try to control red meat intake, and high fat foods, although we do eat pizza every couple of weeks.

I eat a LOT of chicken and whole wheat pasta, occasionally pork, and almost never eat beef. Never eat eggs.

  • Breakfast before a run is a bagel with faux butter and coffee. Either yogurt, or grapefruit post-run, unless it's a really long run and then it's protein and lots of it; lunch varies-lately it's been whole wheat pasta, heart healthy pasta sauce, and whatever veggies are in the fridge diced up and thrown in. Dinner-whatever the heck I want! You name it-pizza, hamburgers, lots of skinless chicken and rice. I try to avoid 3 things-fat, sugar, and salt. I do NOT drink sodas or eat chips. My special treat is cinnamon rolls and I don't have them very often so I really, really savor them when I do have one!

  • I guess I can consider myself an "avid runner" during my marathon training!

I honestly eat anything I feel like. I tend to like eating lots of vegetables and fruits and lean proteins so I suppose my diet is relatively healthy. That doesn't mean I don't eat things like pizza, burgers, fries (my weakness!), etc.

My go to snacks are: frozen yogurt or ice cream (I probably eat this every day!), crackers/hummus, fruit, goldfish (yes the pepperidge farm stuff you ate as a kid!)

  • Another vegan here. No animal products, no processed foods, I don't even take supplements (except turmeric, which I consider a food anyway). A typical day might be:

B:Toast (homemade bread) with natural peanut butter, coffee with almond milk
L:salad w/ walnuts, olives, red and green bell peppers, cucumber, carrots, etc
D: stir fried veggies with tofu or beans, veggie soup, lentil curry, etc.

Snacks are usually nuts and fruit. I eat dark chocolate pretty much every day.

I'm doing really well on this diet, I'm strong and healthy, my race times are steadily improving, I'm in the best shape of my life.

  • I am a vegetarian, so usually after a long run I'll scarf down some greek yogurt with jam ( protein and carbs!) and some oatmeal (which I find keeps me full). I usually eat 5x a day, big breakfast, small morning snack, small lunch, afternoon snack of veggies, and then a pretty big dinner (lots and lots of veggies with some protein).

I definitely indulge, though :P Every Monday night I have a little baking party.

But for real... I don't count calories, fat grams, fiber. I try to eat fairly balanced, but honestly I give it very little thought. At 60 miles a week, I pretty much assume it's all getting burned up one way or another.

  • Lately I have been really paying attention to the ingredients in the food that I buy. I recently discovered Trader Joes and I LOVE their food and a lot of it is very natural. I am not a calorie counter. I do not count carbs, protein, fat, etc. I just try to balance everything out. Training for an ironman race, I figure no matter what I eat, it is all going to get burned up anyway. I do not buy anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup. I really try to limit my simple sugar intake. I have a banana every day. Nothing white except for a potato. Wheat bread, brown rice, whole wheat cereal, whole grain waffles. Fish once a week. Red meat maybe once a week. Nothing fried. As runners, we have so many options for great food and we can really eat a lot because of the high miles!!

But I am not perfect and like sweets, especially cookies and ice cream. I recently have been keeping my eyes open to the sodium content in foods and even though I thought i was probably doing good, I am shocked by how high it is in things! Even for healthy people, the recommendation is 2000mg or less. Being active is great for your health, but the diet is a big part too.

  • Depending on when I run (which depends on which day of the week you're talking about), when I eat what is different. As an example, if I go on a morning run this is what an average day for me is:

Pre-run snack/breakfast: 1/2 cup muesli with 1/2 cup unsweetened organic soymilk and 1/2 banana
Post-run snack/breakfast: 6 Tbsp. egg whites scrambled with sliced fresh spinach cooked into it; wrapped in a small 6-inch corn tortilla with several tablespoons salsa. One large orange or several small tangerines.
Lunch: Large salad made with spinach, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, mushrooms, peas, bell peppers, cooked cold rice, and 1/2 cup cut-up chicken. 1 tablespoon Italian dressing on top.
Afternoon snack: 1 large apple with 2 Tbsp. almond butter; 1 glass of unsweetened organic soy milk.
Dinner: 1 cup steamed broccoli, 1 serving (4 oz. or so) salmon, 1 cup quinoa cooked with a vegetable bouillon cube and sliced carrots.
Evening snack: 1/2 cup frozen blueberries and 1/4 cup frozen cranberries mixed with 1/2 cup unsweetened organic soy yogurt; I sprinkle this concoction with 1/4 cup granola.

The reason for so much soy and no dairy is because I have dairy allergies. Also, this is a good day for me; I often snack a bit more than this...but I try to stay healthy with my snacks.

I don't eat anything partially hydrogenated (or hydrogenated at all), and I try to stay away from corn syrup and sweets in general. I've created recipes to statisfy my sweet tooth, such as oatmeal-raisin cookies sweetened with brown rice syrup and made with mashed up avocados instead of butter and shortening. I then add pumpkin seeds and wheat germ to the recipe, and use whole wheat flour instead of white.

  • I try to stick with "real" food- the less processed the better. If I don't know what the ingredients are I try to avoid it. But I'll try most things once. I eat at least 4x a day and some of the things that show up daily or at least several times a week are: fresh or dried (but not preserved) fruit, Kashi chewy bars, oatmeal, Greek yogurt, a variety of salads, nuts, brown rice, sweet potatoes, steamed or roasted veggies, air popped popcorn, and tons of peanut butter.
If dessert is offered I always accept!

Things I don't eat much: soda, sports drinks, red meat, pork, cow's milk, any processed cheese "product" (like Velveeta- bleh!)
Things I never eat: steak, bologna, pork chops, lamb, roast beef, alcohol

  • I try for mostly organic foods but I not religious about it.

Breakfast is usually some kind of Cereal (usually a high fiber one) although pancakes are a relatively common item on weekends (I used real maple syrup as well).

Lunch varies from a sandwich of some kind to soup (Pho is great)

Dinner is fairly protein rich with chicken the dominant protein source. Dishes range from Chicken Teriyaki to Chicken Parmesan to Chicken Curry to Fried Chicken. Occasionally there's a beef dish in there some place and sometimes a pork or a lamb dish. Salad's are another frequent option with lots of veggies to top the lettuce with and usually some kind of cooked shredded chicken. (Veggies consists of carrots, peas, corn, avocado, various beans, and sometimes asparagus or broccoli. There's also some "crunchy bits" thrown in.)

For my long run days the only thing I do different is add in some sports drink for during the run.

PB on toast and espresso this morning b4 a 6 mile run, followed by oranges and a bowl of cereal, and then some nuts. My weakness is salty chips, which I eat with sandwiches or wraps at dinner. I could probably cut out chips and lose 5 lbs overnight.

  • Thinking too much about food and planning every meal makes me miserable. I eat whatever I want. I run all the time so I don't gain any weight. I don't run THAT much though, maybe 30-40 miles a week, but I still don't gain weight or anything. Anyway, I am a vegetarian, so, no meat. I don't care for sweets and junk food too much so I don't eat them, but I'm on no diet. I hate dieting. I eat with common sense: Lots of fruit and vegetables, lots of stuff that fills me up but doesn't make me feel bloated, lots of natural foods, fresh food, home cooked food, no fast food, no eating out all the time. Most importantly I just think, "Well, is this something that I really need to eat or should I just grab an apple instead?" The apple always wins.

Dinner: some kind of protein (mostly fish or tofu), and a whole bag of steam-able veggies. Depending on how hungry I am, I'll also have quinoa, brown rice, or smart taste egg noodles.

Other stuff: I eat at least 3-4 pieces/servings of fruit each day, string cheese, 100 calorie bags of popcorn, mini clif bars, Kashi chewy granola bars, and I have the biggest sweet tooth ever - I have candy or chocolate almost every night.

    During the week:

Breakfast (7AM): oatmeal, whole grain toast, three eggs.
Snack (10AM): Some kind of fruit
Lunch: Usually nothing because I am not hungry.
Dinner (3PM): Tofu burger, salmon, veggie omelet, steak occasionally
Dessert: Something totally fattening and delicious.

  • Another vegan. I eat three meals a day religiously (breakfast, lunch, dinner) whether I'm hungry or not, and supplement throughout the day. If I'm hungry, I eat -- period. Otherwise my blood sugar drops, I get shaky, cranky... it's just better for everyone if I eat when I'm hungry. I also take B12 since most of the foods I eat aren't artificially fortified.

Mostly I eat whole foods like veggies, fruits, raw nuts and seeds, whole grains at meal times. For snacks I'll eat the same, but may substitute granola or a Clif Bar if I'm desperate. I try to eat low soy through the day because I use a soy protein shake, and too much soy makes me sick. Trying to my wheat consumption down as well since it's difficult for me to digest. I can usually tell WHEN it's going to give me a problem.

Breakfast usually consists of some kind of combination of: toast with natural peanut butter, a banana with PB, soy protein shake, oatmeal, or other fruit (usually blueberries or strawberries)

Lunch is usually a salad, wrap, brown rice with tofu and vegetables, or if I'm planning on running in the evening, I'll have a bagel with PB

Dinner varies the most, depending on how I feel when I get home from work. Almost always I have a rice based dish with some kind of protein (legumes, tempeh, tofu, quinoa, etc).

Snacks are fruit, raw almonds, oatmeal, homemade popcorn, and the occasional homemade cookie or tortilla chips with salsa

Basically, I eat what makes me feel healthy and full.
