What are your favorite non-dairy protein shakes?

asked about 3 years ago | Report

I try to drink a protein shake for breakfast after my runs, and have been drinking a vanilla soy protein mix for years. I'm a little sick of it, frankly, and need something new.

As a side note, "breakfast" is at about 5am, so I'm a big fan of things you add water to and shake/stir. It's not only difficult, but it may be dangerous for me to operate a blender at that time of day (I'm not a morning person).

  • I don't know about anything without a blender, but those propel packets come in lots of great flavors that i use in my shakes. Add a large cup of water (14-16oz) one packet, fruit, ice, and any fruity protein mix.

Sorry that isn't specific at all, i'll try to make one tomorrow and tell you exactly what i use!

  • I tried raspberry-lemonade "K PAX protein blend" and it's pretty good. It didn't say non-dairy on it, but i read the ingredients and I am 99% sure it doesn't contain any dairy. I added 1 cup of raspberries, ice, water, half a packet of raspberry lemonade propel, and I squeezed a lemon into the mix. It was great! You can also mix it into water, but it's not quite as good.

Also, I can't eat gluten so I go to a lot of specialty grocery stores like Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Indian Sun, etc. All of those stores have a dairy free section. Good luck!

  • There are a couple protein drinks I have a preference to. But for early morning, I like Muscle Milk Light and EAS AdvantEdge. Both have descent protein to carb ratio and taste good too! You can get them in ready to drink form so you can avoid the blender :)

  • I get a soy protein/spirulina blend from Vitamin Shoppe that I really like. It's light green (some wouldn't dig this, but it works for me) in color, kinda thick (which makes it feel like eating) and really yummy. This and a few raw almonds makes a perfect breakfast, in my opinion!

  • I also use a protein mix from Vitamin Shoppe called Spiru-tein. It doesn't have milk specifically listed, but it doesn't say dairy free so I'm not sure if there's a dairy protein in there. The two that I like are chocolate (that I mix with vanilla soy milk) and the tropical fruit that I mix with either pomegranate juice or white grape. If you only need non-dairy I'd recommend checking out whole foods or Vitamin Shoppe as they've got a decent choice. Oh, and the chocolate - if I'm not in the mood for a shake I sprinkle it over brown rice crisp cereal and add soy milk for breakfast :)

  • I use Hammer Nutrition Protein. It is the purest protein I have found without any additives. With the chocolate I sometimes use Auquafina Flavor Splash water and mix it. Taste really good or mix it with orange juice and it taste like an Orange Julious.
