Which electrolyte drink do you drink if any?

asked 5 months ago | Report

I am a runner and I'm noticing on long runs such as anything over 6 I get leg cramps, and low energy, tightness in my legs and dragged out by the end of the week. Water isn't enough. I'm looking for an electrolyte drink that isn't sugar based. Has anyone ever tried ZYM endurance electrolyte drink tabs? If so does it do what they say as far as cramping, energy, etc. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks for the responses. I haven't heard of the suggestions posted. I ran over 9 miles today using zym. It did help. I wasn't as sore, it gave a little pep but not like your on a sugar rush so you don't crash.

  • I like this one: http://www.prosource.net/product_details.aspx?category_guid=9effd902-711b-4434-84c5-6139fbaf5b18&item_guid=f07a086c-347d-44e9-b02a-d0478b867e1c It's got good numbers and a lot cheaper than a lot of others. Tastes like the bottom of a boot but you get used to it. I find if I drink it during or right before I get side cramps. If I drink it 2 to 3 hours prior it feels good

  • If you're looking for something with a lighter taste and less sugar you might try Heed. I personally have only used it once during a 100k ultra and at that point I was willing to swallow just about anything offered to me. But it seemed to work fine and went down pretty easy.

  • Big fan of the cytomax mixes and nuun tabs. I've tried a ton of them and these are the only things that have worked for leg cramps for me anyhow

  • I'm also a big Nuun fan...grape is currently my favorite. I used to drink tons of Gatorade but switched to Nuun since it doesn't have all the sugar and calories that Gatorade has.

  • jumping onto the gatorade thing, Gatorade and powerade are just about the worst. They even put on their labels the four electrolytes you need and then if you look at the nutritional info, they have sodium (the one most of us have plenty of already) and the other 3 are listed as not having a significant source of. So it's basically telling you, "this is what you need, but we don't have it. Buy us anyways"

P.S. just noticed I linked the wrong thing in my original answer. fixed. After looking at all the other suggestions, I've noticed they have anywhere from 1/2 to a 1/10th the amount of electrolytes and the emergen-c product and are more expensive.

  • I make my own concoction. A couple tablespoons of lemon juice, a couple of tablespoons of Maple Syrup, then I fill up the rest of my water bottle with water and add a pinch of organic sea salt. I know what the ingredients are and it seems to do the trick for me.

  • Another Nuun fan. It's brilliant. I can take it with me when I travel, I can reuse the bottle. Perfect.
