What is the best dinner for a nighttime runner?

asked 5 months ago | Report

Come 2012 I will only be able to run at night, around 8 and I'll have dinner at 6. I'm planning on having my more protein-heavy meal (with fish or chicken) for lunch, but have no idea what to eat for dinner.

Normally my meal is rice, vegetables and an egg + 2 egg whites; I have not tried running after eating eggs. I have tried running at 8 after a dinner with chicken and got GI issues slightly. Or I was thinking rice, vegetables and lentils/edamame/tofu.

Dailymilers, what do you think?

  • I have found that when I eat whole grains (Whole wheat spaghetti and etc.) of the evenings then I generally feel better in the mornings when I go for a run with a quick snack before my run! =)

  • My body took a few tries to get totally used to running shortly after dinner; now I'm fine if I don't combine a big meal with a hard workout. But, I mostly eat grains and vegetables.

(PS Don't forget to rehydrate and refuel after your evening runs.)

  • Id keep the meal relatively light and concentrate on things that are more easily digested. You should also keep in mind that a snack after the workout might be a good idea, even if its just a meal replacement type drink.

  • Everyone responds to food in their gut during training differently.

Generally the easier to digest, and the more time between eating and running the better. I eat while I am training as well though and am generally ok, especially if it's a multiple hour training session. Just a matter of seeing what you can handle.
