Running towards recovery

posted almost 2 years ago | Report

I'm Bob and I'm an alcoholic. Not very long ago those were words I could agree with but not accept. It was when I started to put my life together again that running became a part of it. Not sure if it was the discipline required or the simple exertion required that drew me in but it has become something I look forward to doing daily now. The runs, walks and bike rides are meditative and restorative for me.
So thats a little piece of my story. Anybody else here on DailyMile finding running does the same for thm in their recovery? Please share your experience , strength and hope.

  • Glad you're here, Bob. My wife likes to do Jazzercise. I came home one day from a run and told her, "Running is my way of dancing." I like to play my favorite songs on my ipod when I run and match my pace to the song so my feet become percussion instruments. It's a real celebration. And sometimes, often, meditative and restorative, as you say.

Thanks Tom. Always amazed how the song I need pops up in just the right time. Keep putting the miles on

  • I'm glad your here too - and glad you're running. :-)

To be honest, running and riding were the main (perhaps only) reason that I did not pick up any substances in the earlier years of my life. It was by the grace of God that I got involved in these activities when I did. Years later, they remain a key part of what it takes for me to stay balanced and healthy, emotionally and physically.

I have spoken to a number of folks for whom exercise is an integral part of their recovery. A good friend pointed me to an organization that a friend of his had started (http://www.theairfoundation.org). I know there are more similar groups out there, I just can't remember their names.

Keep up the good, hard work. :-)
