going from walking to running

posted almost 2 years ago | Report

Ive been walking for years now. Usually I walk three miles. Yesterday was a break through. I actually walked at a pace that was quicker than usual and I did not become short winded. I am pretty sure my legs are finally strong enough to run. I havent ran since I was a teenager. Im kind of a goofy runner. So I will do my runnning here at home on the treadmill.lol I decided to bump up my three miles to five miles. I fell soo good about it. Like I am evolving into a more determined women. I will do the run, walk training to begin. I have no idea why running seems to fear me so much. Well TTFN

  • Go for it! You're definitely ready to make the jump to running! I bet once you start to run a little more, you'll find that it's not as scary as you think!

  • I agree with Caleb... Just start to mix a little running into your walking and I think it will come naturally!

  • go for it, Jen! I also echo Caleb and Chaz. a suggestion: start at 4 min walk, followed by 1 min run, for your 3 miles. gradually see if you can switch that around to 4 min run/1 min walk. then keep bumping up your run time. eventually you'll be able to phase out most of the walks. cheers!

  • I too think you're ready. Try looking up the "couch to 5k" program. Although you might not be training for a 5k, it's a great program that you can use that mixes running with walking.

  • Alternating walking with a couple minutes of running for your 3 miles will get you through this transition. Start with something like 5 min walk, 2 min run, repeat, etc. Increase the running interval and decrease the walking interval over time and it will happen before you know it. Running is a very rewarding experience- don't be afraid!

  • One of the most respected running coaches Jeff Galloway advocates a run/walk pattern for new runners. Try looking at this ---> http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

It's a couch to 5K program that utilizes the Galloway method.

You are definitely ready!!! Go for it!
