A call for help and friends

posted 9 months ago | Report

right, here's the background, i started running the c-5k a couple of years back, really to see if i could do it, i never ran as a kid, i was the kid that would finish last at school. I complete it and enjoyed, i now try and run 3 times a week, but recently have stated to slip and put weight back on. So, this is call for help, i need training tips, motivation, and diet tips please.

  • good luck with your training! one tip i've found useful for motivation: if you commute to work and you can't do mornings (like myself), try stopping somewhere to run after work, rather than first going all the way home. i've found that once i get home, it's easy for me to kick back and relax, but i can avoid that by doing my run before. it also gives you a bit of variety to your runs since you're running in a different area. hope it helps!

  • Katie, is right on. Also would suggest vary routines and activities. If you run the same route in your neighborhood repeatedly try a long trail run at a local park. Add a lake swim to the end of your run. I can get real bored with just running the same route over and over again. One last tip, see if theres a running store in your area that offers group runs in the evenings and go join them to meet some new people

  • It might also be worth signing up for a local race - having a goal like a 5k or a 10k gives you a clear target to shoot for, so each run will feel like it has a purpose.

But I totally agree with Katie and Bob. Mix your routes up a bit, try a trail if you usually run on roads, turn down a street that you'd always walked past but never actually explored, and you might be amazed what you come across. (In my case, when I lived in London I discovered - amongst other things - that I lived near a prison!)

Diet-wise, I found that as I ran more, I just gravitated towards healthier food without thinking about it. Although I write that having just gorged myself on Mexican.

    Good luck!

  • Ahh, cheers guys, never thought to stop after work for a run. That's a dead good idea too, perfect way to unwind as well :) I know of a monthly 10k run, i guess i'll go next time. i,ve never raced before, always preferred to run on my own. i'll guess i suck it and see :)
