Who is running The Philly Marathon this year??

posted 11 months ago | Report

Back in March I ran my first Half Marathon and had a blast finishing 1:59:16, finishing just under my 2hr. goal. I promised myself that if I did infact finish under 2hrs. that I would attempt a full..so here I am giving some serious thought to running my first marathon in Philly in November and looking at a goal of 4:15. Does anyone plan on running in Philly or has anyone run it in the past? Looking for some feedback, wisdom and guidance. Also looking for other first timers to possibly run with.

  • I've been tossing around the idea of doing the half.. but it's only a few weeks after my first marathon (10/7), so I don't know if I want to commit myself to that.. Good luck if you decide to do it!

  • I ran the 2009 Philly Marathon - was my first full marathon. I loved it, despite the fact that I shouldn't have run it in the first place (had a bad case of tendinitis/ITBS). Great mixture of mild hills and flats, plenty of nice scenery (though the out-and-back of the second half is not as exciting as the first half). I'm going to run the half this year.

  • I actually ran it the same year that Laura did. I loved it! of the 5 I've done it's also my best time. I moved to Chicago in '95 but grew up there so I'm a little biased too. Having it in Nov. the cooler temps were wonderful that year. Definitely some hills here and there in Fairmount Park, we ran up some of the hills on the Penn/Drexel campuses and the students were handing us beer and food! that was hilarious. The only tough part was that the half was run at the same time so when they finished we kept running an out and back all the way down to Manayunk. Crowd support along the Drive was ok but in Manayunk it was off the hook--as good as London or Chicago. Finishing at the Art Museum with the Rocky theme blaring and everyone screaming was super cool! I've done Chicago twice, London and Fargo but Philly was special. Enjoy it!

  • I ran Philly last year as my first marathon and will be doing this again come November. It's a nice course and you actually get to see quite a bit of the city. There is just one out and back around mile 14-15 (I think) which is essentially a long turn around, but the atmosphere is great. There are crowds pretty much everywhere and of course you get to start and finish by the Art Museum. If you think you have any energy left you can always run the stairs like Rocky. If you haven't got the energy you can at least take your picture with the Rocky statue at the base of the stairs. Go for it.

Thanks for the reponse Ian. Was wondering, since this was your 1st marathon was finishing your main goal or did you train to run a certain time that you thought was realistic? I ran my only Half on 3/25 in 1:59, but would really be happy just finishing the 26.2 with a decent time under 4:30 . I'm thinking I'm IN!!!

  • All registered for Philly and ready to start training...this has to be one of the craziest thing I've ever done, but really want it at the same time!!
