Cyclist not following state laws running stop signs, red lights and such and runners/walkers not going against traffic

A few things really get to me, but the biggest is people who are stuck up about their perceived level of fitness and condescend or make fun of those who are either out of shape or appear new in the gym or to the sport. That's what makes so many people afraid of going into gyms, joining a cycling/running club, tennis/racquetball courts etc.
They try it once, someone makes one remark, and they don't go back.
It hasn't happened to me but I've seen and heard of it happening to others.

in reply to what Bryce H. said:Cyclist not following state laws running stop signs, red lights and such and runners/walkers not going against traffic
While I generally agree with you, I do have to point out a couple things:
Sometimes cyclists not following laws w/regards to stop lights is done so to actually speed things up for everyone involved. Depending on which direction the cyclist is going and where the traffic is flowing - it may be faster to let the cyclist go through the sign/light and get out of your way as opposed to having to wait for said cyclist who may be at a dead stop, and need to get moving, clip in, and accelerate before you can go (for example, to turn right).
However, I see on your profile you are a triathlete, so I'm sure you are familiar with this. With that in mind, I suspect you are talking about those instances where cyclists blatantly disregard rules of the road and endanger themselves and others with reckless abandon. In that case, I fully agree with you.As far as runners/walkers not going against traffic - I'm sure you are aware of the obvious exception situations like more shoulder on the side of the road going with traffic, or running on the other side to balance things out against the crown of the road.
Just felt compelled to point out some instances where the person is fully aware of what they're doing, and doing so with good reason (not necessarily for your benefit, but for those who may read this thread)

Smokers.
People who let their dogs roam off-leash.
People who don't watch their kids on the trail. It's great that the little ones are actually out doing something but they have no awareness of others at all.

You hit that right on the head. I am a heavier person (about 50 pounds overweight). No one has said anything to me at the gym but some of my co-workers have said things like "YOU run?" Just because I'm a little overweight doesn't mean I can't run or kick your ass! LOL People who talk about others or make someone else feel bad are idiots. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Agree with the off-leash dogs. However, just as bad are those who use the long retractable leashes and their dogs are running from one side of the trail to the other leaving you to (hopefully )hurdle the trip wire.

+1 to Bryce and Adam!
I have had (only a few) cyclists yell at me for no apparent reason, and generally behave as if the rules of the road do not apply to them. But they are kindred spirits in fitness, so I am always respectful. Probably lots of runners are guilty of the same offenses.
Adam's response really hit a nerve with me. The runners who feel "elite" because they have a faster pace than me, or have run 287 marathons, or have been running for 30 years. Those people are what drove me to DM from another popular Runner's (World) forum. As I told one of the elitists, unless you earn a six-figure income from running, we are all amateurs. DM has the best people out there for motivation and advice, without the mockery and judgmental attitudes.
Wow Kim, that's the most I've ever typed in a response!posted 4 months ago

What really gets my panties in a bunch are guys at the gym who have to grunt as loud as they can when lifting and then stand up and give a big bark like they just won an Olympic medal!!! Seriously, if you want everybody to notice you wear a chicken outfit to the gym!!!

unbehaved dogs...or should I say unbehaved owners with dogs. Loose or on a (long) leash... no regards for their surroundings. Even some runners that run with dogs on those retractable leashes and then all of a sudden stop and expect you to make your run into a hurdle event. Especially when the dogs are those little tiny guys. It's that I love animals and know it's their owner who's at fault but else I'd love to just step on them. oh now you've opened a whole can of worms haha

Yes and there is always an exceptions to the rules. Like when stopped at a light and I don't trip the light after waiting a few I will go through if there isn't a car coming soon to trip the light. Stop signs I stop might not un-clip but will stop and let a vehicle through as if I were an actual motorized vehicle. The more consistent I can be the more drivers will be able to know what I am doing. Figure it is safer for me and less stressful for the drivers.
If they wave me through I give them a thank you wave.Thank you for your response well taken.

There are always going to be people faster and slower than us. But I always try to remember we all started from the same place.
A rule of thumb I have is when running in a group is that everyone knows the route so if they get a head or behind we know where the finish is and we wait until everyone has returned safely.

I hate when a cyclist is coming at you and the cyclist behind that cyclist tries to pass just as
you are about to run by the first cyclist and thus makes you jump off the trail to avoid a bad collision. I really would like to throw an elbow into the jaw of this Lance Armstrong wannabe. I never would do it - but boy does it cross my mind.posted 4 months ago

I have 2 at the moment. The fact that pedestrians don't seem to have the right of way anymore at cross walks here in MI. We just don't seem to keep an eye out for people on feet anymore. Guess I'll just keep running trails when I can. Speaking of trails, people who walk their dogs and don't keep them on a short leash when you pass. I've had to leap out of harms way from a lunging dog. I absolutely LOVE animals but I think folks should know their animals and shorten the leash when need be.

I'm loving all the responses. Another one is the driver that thinks they need to get as close as they possibly can to a runner while they are on the road. I move to the shoulder when I'm on the roads but people think it's cute to try and hit you with their mirrors. What are they thinking?? I give a wide girth to those runners that I pass on the streets while I'm driving. They always, and I mean always, throw up a hand as if to say "thank you". I wonder if the drivers that try to run you down are upset that you are doing something that they aren't? I don't know.

Bryce, I'm so with you on the road rules and safety. The other day I was driving home at night and had to pass a runner, dressed in all dark clothes, running with traffic about six feet away from a perfectly clear sidewalk. What?!? And I always follow the laws when on my bike, so when I see a cyclist being an ass and making their own rules, I feel like they make the rest of us look bad.
Conversely, I also hate drivers who don't respect a biker's right to the road. I can't even count the number of times I've been honked at for riding on a street with no traffic (except for the car passing me), despite the fact that I make sure to be courteous and ride as far to the edge of the road as I can. It drives me crazy.

Well one of my pet peeves is when I get picked on by those few idiots out there for running at my current pace and then followed by comments of "wow you must be one the last ones that will come through the finish line..what is the time limit for that race again?" For the most part, I surround myself by a lot of supportive people but there are a small few that can be rude as all get out. What planet do people like that come from LOL! I don't know if any of you have ran across that before. I am supportive to those who have been doing it for a long time, beginners, etc..because at least they are getting out there doing it! But I noticed that when I ask those few folks, do they run, they don't and used to run years ago! I just laugh and walk away!!!

Anyone who makes rude comments like that doesn't deserve the time of day. Are they runners? I can't imagine another runner making fun of your pace, most runners are extremely helpful. Just keep smiling and keep running. Those that feel the need to try and make you feel bad are probably just miserable with themselves.

Thanks Kim. When I ask them, they are in no way runners. They just make rude comments like that and I don't know why. I have only had probably about 2 since I started and it only took those 2 times for me to know that iggs me. Like you said some folks are just miserable with themselves. Runners have been extremely helpful and that is what I LOVE about running.

They do that because of their own low self-opinion. They gotta rattle someone else, to counter their own insecurities. I went through the same garbage when I joined a gym last year. Am reminded of it now at the second gym. My 37 yr old self feeling once again judged by the college age majority of other members. This one I try to hit in the early afternoon-less macho/giggly crowd, the other gym I hit after work-usually empty at that hour.

Oh, I'm so afraid of this happening to me, which is why I keep training without running in any official races. I run at a turtle's pace! Hopefully, I won't hear too many comments about it during my race in May. It helps to know I wouldn't be the only one, though. :)

This isn't so much a "pet peeve," per se, since I understand the intent is good, but I wish drivers wouldn't turn on their brights as soon as they see me running (and I do run on the left side of the road, and with a blinking LED light for visibility). I completely understand they are doing it out of concern for my/their safety, but I'm always completely blinded by their brights, and can no longer see where I'm going or where the edge of the road is!

Agree! I run with my dogs daily and NOT on retractable leashes! My dogs are there to run not to socialize....why must people with those retractable leashes let their dog wander into our lane (there is a white line painted down the middle for a reason!) And to those sorry owners who think your little dog will obey and you don't need a leash; my big dogs are threatened when your dog comes charging at us and will eat your prized pet!!! Sorry for the vent. LOL

I have dogs and when i taking them for a run, I keep them on a short bungie leash thing that is attached to my waist and do stop and pull them close to me when anyone else is on the trail.
Though I did have a cyclist come up behind me once and I guess he was expecting me to notice him/hear him. He just waited, once I saw him I move the dogs over and he went around, making it VERY clear that he was annoyed at waiting and had been afraid to approach me. I wish he has just SPOKEN TO ME. People are funny.
I also get annoyed by people at the gym who are "working out" at such a leisurely pace that they aren't sweating. I don't mean slow pace because I am slow too. I mean people who forget the "work" part of work out. Why bother going to the gym if you are going to do that?
Crazy looks from drivers.... I am never sure what they are thinking. Here are some of my assumptions.
What is the crazy person doing running on this narrow road? Answer- I live along this road and have to start my running here.
What are you doing?? (while smoking, eating fries, etc) Answer- I am trying to be healthy and why does it annoy you. The fact that I am active is not preventing you from being active. (I can get a lot from a momentary glance or I have an active imagination) :)
Biggest Pet Peeve- Drivers who are weaving around because they are texting while driving. I am considering carrying an airhorn so I can BLAST them when they start creeping into "my lane", also known as the shoulder.

Stephanie- I can't imagine anyone making a hurtful comment at a race. I am a seriously slow poke and I have found nothing but support and encouragement from other runners. Many will stay at the finish and encourage others as they finish.
At my first half, I met a serious bad ass runner who had completed many ultras, an ironman, etc. and he chatted with me and my newbie runner friend at the start as if we were colleagues.
I have since done races with friends and solo, I always meet people to talk to and have found lots of encouragement. Even if I am running WAY at the back of the pack. :)

Yes, people who let their dogs roam without a leash...and when you're running and someone with their dog on a leash doesn't keep them at a distance from you. I have almost been barreled into by big dogs who aren't properly restrained by their owners. I have also had a kid swerve into my path on a bicycle, too...that was fun. And in regards to people smoking, the worst is when you smell it while running...that makes me want to barf, lol.

Stephanie...don't let it keep you from running in a race. There is nothing more satisfying than crossing a finish line, no matter what time you come in! I am, by no means, a fast runner. Oh yeah -- high beams and those super bright spotlights pointed toward the road. I always wear a hat when I run so I can use the brim to block them.
I'm also surprised at how many people will drive their kid 200 feet to the bus stop, then sit there with their lights pointed right at another house for 15 or 20 minutes.
