Am I using my GPS correctly?

asked about 1 year ago | Report

I'm on week 4 of Couch to 5K and I'm using MyTracks on my android. Today it says my pace is 8.01km/min. Does that sound right for someone at my level?

Other runs I've done, I've started to record a new track even before the GPS connection was locked so I think my results have been messed up...the clock was timing me but the GPS didn't know where I was for the first few minutes. Tonight I was sure to get a GPS connection before I started.

thanks in advance!

  • I presume you mean 8.01min/km. I.e. you covered 1 km in just over 8mins. This equates to around a 12.50min/mile (I think in miles).

This to me doesn't seem too far out, especially if your still doing quite a bit of walking.

To answer the GPS quesion I would always wait until it knows where you are before you start recording. Otherwise your very likely to get inaccurate results.

    Hope that helps.

You could double check your distance from time to time by mapping your route manually here on DM (or sketchroute.com or others). If your run has lots of curves, trees, buildings or hills/mountains to one side or the other, the GPS can be significantly off.

Since you're just beginning, I wouldn't pay much attention to pace except as a benchmark to see your progress. Good luck!
