How do I rebuild base fitness after 12 mths of little running.

asked 3 months ago | Report

I had trained to run NYC Marathon in 2010 but not long before event decided not to fly from Sydney to NY as doctor said our baby might arrive early. Have only just started running again and finding even 5k runs a struggle. It's very depressing to remember how fit I once was and now find it all so difficult. Any suggestions on how to rebuild base fitness or even just some encouragement....

  • start at the beginning it may take a little time but bet you'll bounce back pretty quickly but don't try to pick up where you left off start at the beginning

  • The simple answer: just get down to it. Get out and run, lift and all that fun stuff

  • I am just returning to running from a month off after a back injury so I can't imagine how you feel after 12 months. I'm thinking that maybe signing up for a race will give me some extra motivation, something you might want to think about. Not necessarily another marathon (yet) but even a short race can be fun and inspiring. Good luck!

  • John hello most of us have been there.
The most important thing is to take it slowly and not too rush, too much too soon may set you back even longer if you pick up an injury or tire yourself (psychologically) out.
It's difficult to be prescriptive on these these forums but I gather that you will at least have a youngster demanding of your time, I have no idea of how fit you are (were),age, weight, work, etc etc.
    Some suggestions
1- plan activity in your diary "me time" 3-4 times a week ideally
2- mix up the exercise, will aid recovery and broaden your exercise base
3- look around the web for a plan (assuming running again) that looks realistic and achievable for you
4- perhaps look ahead a few months and plan for an event? any parkruns in your area?
5- trawl dm for like minded folk and support
Good luck I've sent a FR in case you want me to be one of your cheer leaders
