Another swimming question: Goggles that don't disfigure?

asked 5 months ago | Report

I look downright scary after a mile in the pool, because my goggles leave lines and puffiness around my eyes, and it lasts for hours. I wish I could attach a photo to show you what I mean. Now, I realize this might just be lucky old me - I do have an unusually large head, so I imagine most women's goggles aren't designed for me - but has anyone else experienced this, and is there a way to correct the fit? Any strap extenders on the market? I wear Speedo women's goggles, they are adjusted as loose as they can be, and they don't feel unduly tight on me while I'm wearing them. In fact, I was excited when I first bought them because they were the most comfortable I'd had, but the problem persists. Help!!!

UPDATE: Okay, I feel better. I don't see any way to post again on my own thread (!), so I'm thanking you up here.

  • I think it is a problem with any goggles. if you loosen them too much you get water in them during your turns. I wear my Speedo goggles very tight and I have the lovely red-purple rings around my eyes for about an hour or so after. Not the most attractive but I don't care! haha

I get the same awful rings & look like I'm 100 years old for an hour after swimming!

They look goofy but I often swim in Aqua Sphere goggles that fit a little more like a dive mask. Of course, if you're training for triathlons, you have to swim in the same goggles you'll race in but these are nice for some swims. They seal really well, too.

Oh, you can also buy stretchy, easily adjustable bungie straps to replace the hair ripping, plastic straps that come with goggles. swimoutlet.com has them.

    Good luck!!

  • From a 7 year competitive swimmer, if you don't get those rings, your goggles aren't tight enough! Proper tightness is when your eyes feel slightly like they're being suctioned out of your head. However, If they are so tight that they cause pain and/or headaches for more than a few days to a week (that's how long it usually takes to get used to new goggles/caps), then they should be loosened a little. Unfortunately, looking like a red raccoon that hasn't slept in weeks and has a head cold is part of the swimming experience.
