What is the best cure for Osgood-Schlatter?

posted about 3 years ago | Report

I have had problems in my right hip for years now, I used to have this same problem in my knees. I have always been told that rest will help, but when I begin running again after I rest, the pain eventually comes back. Anyone know the best way to cure this? I really do not want to rest in order to avoid putting stress on the hip.

  • Have you tried a Chiropractor? They're great.

  • As a pre-teen, I use to suffer from Osgood-Schlatter's. The immediate treatment was rest and ice. Unfortunately, the long term treatment was to hold off on all sports while I was in middle school. The good news is that Osgood-Schlatter’s is a temporary condition that goes away when the bones stop growing.

The symptoms, pain and swelling on the front of the leg just below the kneecap, are caused by the thigh muscle pulling on the point where the patellar tendon connects to the tibia tuberosity (the bump on the front of the upper end of the lower leg bone).

During adolescence, the area of the tibia tuberosity is located on a cartilage growth plate, which is weaker than solid bone. So, repetitive activities such as running cause small fractures or tears to the tibia tuberosity. After adolescence, the cartilage growth plate is replaced by solid bone.

I wouldn’t think that the pain you’re experiencing now, especially pain in the hip, would be Osgood-Schlatter’s. If you’re experiencing pain similar to what you experienced with Osgood-Schlatter’s then it might be patellar tendonitis. As for the pain in hip, it could be many things, but if you have pain from running it’s time to consult a doctor that specializes in sports orthopedics.

  • My 15yo has OG but I agree with Richard, it should be gone at your age. I have him on 1.2g of ibuprofen a day and he wears a special OG band (just google them, they are everywhere) for sports. He has had to give up Judo though.

  • The only hip pain I've had in the last year was trochanteric bursitis. It was alleviated by stretching the ITB at the hip.
