Glucosamine supplements:

posted over 2 years ago | Report

A recent Internet poll at runnersworld.com showed that 94.5 percent of respondents said they had tried one of the supplements such as glucosamine and/or chondroitin.

Does anyone in dailymile.com know if taking these supplements will help of not?

  • I can only speak for me..It has helped but only the kind with Hydrolic Acid. Since I started taking it I have had little knee pains. Could be a Placebo thing..but if it is not broke do not fix. My dad is 70 and has had knee problems and it is working for him as well.

  • There has been mixed results on Glucosamine supplementation effectiveness testing. Some studies do indicate that they work, but a recent study showed that they work every bit as well as a placebo (which do work!).

  • I used to take it on a regular basis and I felt like it really helped. It took a while to kick in but I definitely noticed when I quit taking it.

  • Glucosamine worked extremely well for me. I consider myself to be in good shape, I have done a lot of physical exercise all my life. I try to stay in good shape. In 2007 I tore my back up really bad while doing a lot of heavy lifting at building a large deck. I tried everything I could think of, Aleve, Advil, Excedrin etc etc. then I went to the Drs. & they gave me anti inflamatory meds, Percoset & muscle relaxers. My back was so messed up I couldn't take driving 20 miles in a comfortable car without stopping & walking around. This went on for a few weeks. The Dr. sent me to a top rated physical therapist twice a week for 2 hours each time for 2 months to no avail. They did electric stim, massage, & had me do different exercises they said I would have to do for the rest of my life. At night while sleeping I would roll over every 20-30 minutes because of the pain & would wake up at 2-3 am & have to get down on the floor & do my exercises in order to get back to sleep. Every morning I had to start my day with exercises, life was really tough. Finally after the Dr. & therapists told me that was all they could do, I decided to try Glucosamine after seeing a Dr. on TV say it was most effective, he also said the additive Chondriton ...(sp?) didn't do anything one way or the other . I took the Glucosamine per instructions of 2000 mg per day for 3-4 weeks & the pain disappeared totally!!! That was a year ago & I still take 1000 mg along with a multivitamin daily & I feel great. I have since asked different Drs. what they thought of it & every one of them agreed it is great stuff. I asked if any of them thought it was a placebo & they said no. I have since moved & my Dr. here takes it & swears by it. So I know in my case it is NOT a placebo!!!! I now ride my bike 20 or so miles a day 2-3 times a week & I feel great..:-)
As far as placebos go, I try to do all the research I can on prescribed drugs vs. over the counter & then I make up my own mind. I think you should ask yourself a few questions, such as who stands to gain? Do Drs. usually tell you to buy something over the counter? I think its sort of like asking the wolf to guard the chicken coop. The drug industry naturally wants to sell their drugs. They have a lot more power & money to make sure people are using their products. We used to watch every Thursday in which a large drug co. had 2 reps come to our Drs. office & bring in trays of snack foods for the staff of 6 people, worth 75-$100 so tell me do you think the Drs. are doing their bidding?

  • I'm considering adding glucosamine to my daily diet to see if it will help with the final stages of my banged up cartilage in my knee. Plan on asking my physiotherapist about it on Monday. I've thought about chondroitin, but haven't really seen any type of vegetarian option for it. Does anyone know if there is a veg-based chondroitin?

  • I have never heard of this....new runner here with a recent knee issue....can anyone tell me what this supplement is?! Thank you!

  • Generally speaking, it's a substance found in crustacean exoskeletons. In some studies, it's been proven to be effective in repairing joint cartilage. which is why those who like it are often taking it to help with knee problems.

Personally, I rarely take it, only because I get lots of aches and pains, but rarely in my knees. However, as far as supplements go, it's pretty cheap, no side effects and - as seen in this thread - sometimes effective for joint relief.

  • I have had "bad" knees since I was teenager (so, over 35 years). They ache All the Time, sometimes bad enough for Advil. I always just sucked it up and dealt with it because I never realized I had a choice. I recently started taking glucosamine and my knee pain is GONE! I got a local (Mexican) brand but just ran out and started taking the Trader Joe's brand (I'd picked up when we were in the US last year) and it seems to be just as good. I take 1200mg (one pill) each night along with the fish oil and multivitamin. It took about a week (not quite, but about) for the glucosamine to kick in, so I'm thinking it wasn't placebo.

  • A recent study indicates that Glucosamine + Vitamin D have a synergistic effect.

I get my Glucosamine from Costco.com 9and my vitamin D, its cheap, its delivered fast... and it comes in large quantities.

  • After few months and wondering if the pain will go away or not, and without noticing it, the pain is gone. I read articles on the net describing my exact symptoms and one stated that it may go away by itself.

And I hope this is not a temporary relief and I hope it will not return. Knee pain is not good for a runner. I now continue to run 20-25 Miles a week and feeling good, knock on wood....

  • in reply to what Janna T. said:I use glucosamine chondrioditon

I do too, have for about 10 years, have found it beneficial but not miraculous. It enabled me to do more long runs and train for two marathons. However I've since retired from marathons after 4 total. The knees are good but the rest of the body can't take the long runs anymore.

  • For me, I feel like it got me back to running after an injury. I tore cartilage in my ankle, had to have surgery, after 1 year of no running and still having pain I started taking glucosamine with chondroitin. It took about a month to start working but I have been back to running for almost 2 years with no pain in that ankle. The liquid form works just as well as the pill. Some say the liquid absorbs better and quicker. I don't know if that's true.
