Is this just bad runner's knee? And how much will it set me back?

asked almost 2 years ago | Report

After my first 15k Sat., both knees hurt behind the patella, in the center of the knee. The L is worse. I guess it's just bad runner's knee. I'm seeing the ortho tomorrow.

So, I'm supp. to run my first marathon (trail race) 15 May. How much can an injury like this set me back, if it's "just" runner's knee?

  • I've been pushing myself for the last several weekends moving from 10k to 12K then to 16K, and last weekend 19k... after each my legs were sore in the ankles, knees, and some muscle tenderness. What I've found is it made running the next day a definite challenge... but by two or three days after I was pretty much healed up and running normally.

At the worse, after my first push past 12K (running 16K), my legs got pretty sore and I was having a sharp pain behind the knee cap on the upper edge that would be painful enough to get a real reaction out of me... But, a week of easy runs, working to favor the knee a little and reducing the impacts of running as much as possible (like using my softest shoes)... I was able to run the 19K the following weekend and recovery time has been better this time. So, can it set you back... you're the only one who knows how much pain you have... but, it is possible to work through the pain (if its only muscle strain and building up joint strength) and not have a set back. You're doing the right thing consulting with a doctor... but, key here is to not let the injury become more of a set back than it really is.

I suspect that the tenderness and soreness are some light bruising and muscle tension from all the impact that my body's not used to yet. And, as I've increased the distance the post run pain has been become less of an issue.
