What is causing the pain in my upper ankle/lower shin? Should I be worried about it?

asked about 2 years ago | Report

I have a pain in the inside of my left shin, about 3 inches above my ankle bone.

It does not feel like muscle pain, and it does not hurt when I run or walk. In fact, I do not notice it unless there is direct pressure applied to the area.

There is no swelling. It feels like a bruise, but there is no discoloration.

As a new runner, I'm probably overly concerned about every little ache and pain that I don't recognize. I've been running 3x/week for 3 weeks.

Thanks for your help!

  • Hi Jennifer,
Sounds like you have shin-splints. There can be several reasons for this. Run technique (heel-strike), bad running shoes, overload (overweight or overtraining) etc.
There are many things you can do for preventing or treating shin-splints. Rest, stretching icing etc

You can read more about this on the web, Just google "shin-splints"

    Hope that helps,
    Patrick

  • if problem persits see a doc.my experiance with this is in a new runner it is from your quadercep muscles being weak and all of the pressure is going to your shins in time your muscles will get stronger and this issue will resolve.my suggestion is for you to do lunges twice a week and some hamstring work to build up your supporting muscles.this is only a suggestion I am not a doc.so can not say if this issue is more seriuos and it is not a bad thing to be worried about pain becuase you want this to be a lifetime enjoyment and you want to listen to your body.
