I am overcoming a 2nd metatarsal stress fracture so I feel your pain. The best advice I found is in this article as it covers everything about stress fractures: http://camilleherron.com/2011/05/11/overcoming-stress-fractures
In a nutshell, she recommends light walking (30 minutes) and strength training. Before I read her article, I swam and rode a bike and did a little bit on the stair master. I hope to start running again in two weeks. Good luck!

I broke my 5thmetatarsal a long while back and was in a hard cast for 6 weeks or so and prohibited from running for a copule more weeks. i was able to cycle and swim anything that didn't put weight on the foot. might also look into deep water running. it's a run work out in the deep end of the pool w/ a floatation belt it is very intense and kinda boring but keep you in running shape. good luck and mend up soon
