Right foot hurts on top in small area.

asked 4 months ago | Report

Wondering if anyone has dealt with this....
My right foot on the top started to slowly get sore (small area, mid-foot more towards the outside). Felt like every running shoe I wore would press against it right on the top of the shoe where the mid-foot bends. Got to the point where it would just burn at night and hurt every time I ran until I got very warm. No bruising, not an ounce of swelling and can't even seem to find the spot if I press all around. Hurts the most when i stand on my front of foot firmly and pivot left to right.

I took a solid 3 weeks off and did elliptical and bike. Foot got to the point where I couldn't even feel it anymore. Ran a 5k the other night and pain is back. Maybe only 50% of what it was but I'm sure if I continue it will come back fully.

Is it possible for the top of your shoe pressing against the top of your foot to cause discomfort for that long?

  • Hi Frank. I had something similar years ago. I changed the way I laced my shoes and it took pressure off the top of my foot. Check out this guide and see if it helps. Good luck and happy running. Cheers

  • If you have a high instep, shoe pressure could be the problem. Try high-instep lacing pattern where instead of laces crossing over painful spot, they run straight up to the next eyelet before crossing over. You might also be developing a metatarsal stress fracture. See an ortho doc...or at the very least, listen to your foot and don't push through this pain.

  • I've had pain on top of foot that was relieved by loosening the laces and icing after runs. I've also had stress fractures that hurt in that area. Had to take a month off and ride bike instead.

  • I'm with the majority here - my last new pair of shoes hit in a different way than normal and I had a lot of pain in the top of my foot. Redoing the laces helped tremendously! Even after redoing them though it still took several days for the pain to totally subside. Good luck!
