Tattoos and Triathletes...

posted about 1 year ago | Report

I've often contemplated getting some sort of ink professing my love of the sacred sport, but I always feel like it would be out of place. Does anyone have any?

  • I've long thought of but have neither done myself nor seen on anyone the following: a quarter or third of a circular arc on the inside right ankle mimicking the impression made by the teeth of a greasy chainring. For style, could have a Campy or some other logo.

    Just an idea...

  • I do not have any triathlon related tats but I guess the most popular is the M-dot logo.

  • I told myself if I break a set time I will get a 13.1 tattoo. I would love to get a M-Dot tattoo, but only if I did a full and I don't think that is in the picture for me. In the meantime I picked up 4 press on 13.1 tattoos for race day this year.

  • I got the m-dot but it wasn't out of my love for the "sacred sport". I got it because before I started triathlon I didn't think Ironman was possible for someone like me. I accomplished something I didn't think possible after setting a very high race goal for myself. Of course now that I have done it I know it isn't much to finish (sorry for those of you I just shocked) but it is fun to see just how hard you can push yourself. I'll attack my 4th this fall

  • No sport tattoos ... yet.
I always said I would never get a brand name of any type tattooed on me, but the M-Dot will find its way as soon as I finish my first one. I think when you sign up for the race, Ironman should give you a gift certificate for the tattoo.

  • My husband designed a beautiful tri tattoo for me, but I've yet to have it inked. I was going to after my first half ironman last year, but I might wait until my first ironman. Or maybe I'll just get it this year. The trick is, when can I get it that I will have the desire to stay out of the water long enough to let it heal! That's a conundrum!

  • I have a good friend that plans on getting the Ironman tattoo when he completes his first. I think thats alright and a good goal and if you like it then go for it! Just remember, you have to live with it the rest of your life. But heck, doing an Ironman is something pretty awesome so why not get the memory imprinted on you.
I have a tattoo, and as much as I love sports (swimming, cycling, snowboarding, maybe not so much running, and tris of course) I don't see myself about to stamp those on myself. Being active is part of who I am, and everyone can see that. My tattoo is also something of a symbol of who I am, but its usually hidden (can't have it showing at work right) and its pretty and I love it. Anywho, thats my two cents :)

Mine would be smaller though if I ever got brave enough to get one :)

  • No sports related tats here, only heritage related ones. I don't think they'd be out of place, especially if you've "earned" them. I like to think of them as medals you can wear all the time :-). By the way, hello to everyone, since I'm a noob to the site--first post ever!

  • Any tattoo that means something important to you will never be out of place. Go for it! Your fellow Triathletes will understand the sentiment!

  • I designed a cool 70.3 that I said I would get once I finished my half-ironman to acknowledge an accomplishment I didn't think possible. Race finished w a good time and still haven't inked, but would like to. Do we think they are kinda douche?

  • I apologize upfront if this comes off bad.

Have no intention of having some corporate logo inked into my skin. ;-)

Plus maybe it's the crowd I hang with but out of every 20 I know, someone has finished an IM.

Disclaimer: I've completed a 1/2IM and no longer have any desire to do a full. Maybe when my kids are older but not at this point in my life.

  • I keep thinking about getting Tri ink, but haven't yet. I like the circle logo with the run / swim / bike icons in it, but I haven't found one I love yet. If there is an Ironman in my future, I'll probably get that inked on me as well.

That being said, at my last sprint tri there was a lot of Tri ink. Some good, some bad. I think of it as a medal you wear forever. I'm keeping it in mind, though, that when I'm getting passed by some kid on the run leg of a sprint, that IM tattoo might look a little silly.

  • I just got one today! It's similar in design to the flickr link above. After I watched my sister do a tri, I wanted to have a go at it myself. Once I completed mine I knew I would get some symbol about it tattooed on me. Plus I plan on doing more multisport events (not necessarily traditional tri's) so I will continue to add 'events' to my shoulder. I'll post a pic when I take the bandage off tonight!

  • Very nice. Lots like the one posted earlier on Flickr, but I like it a lot. I'll probably get something similar on my calf.

  • I will get an M Dot after my first triathlon. I currently have a running tattoo that I really like. It is a big red heart just below my right hip bone with an arrow through it and a banner across it that reads, "Love The Run." I am not sure where I will get the M Dot. Maybe the left hip area. But, I may get a tattoo after I run the Boston Marathon. Lots of tattoos to consider. Everyone should have at least one. It's an interesting experience.
