New here and needing motivation...

posted over 2 years ago | Report

I'm trying desperately to get back into shape, regain my energy and do my second triathlon. I'm fallen apart the past couple years and neither my mind nor body seem to want to push myself at all. Working out used to always be my "happy pill" and wonder if anyone feels like sharing an inspirational/motivational reason as to why they keep putting one foot in front of the other when they would really rather go plop and eat Ben & Jerry's or go back to bed! : P Can you tell where my mind is right now!?! heehee

  • Hi Jenn: I know exactly where you are at! I was an accomplished marathoner & ultramarathoner who loved running, was in great shape and never needed a reason to get out on the roads or trail. Then, I moved and everything was unfamilar, I had a stressful new job and suddenly I was eating pizza and not running at all. You need to find new reasons to get out there, other than "I should". Start out small (which is hard when you are used to going "big". Walk run for 20 minutes around the block, then do it again a couple days later. You would be surprised how quickly that can become 5 km, then 10 km. My best motivation lately has been a friend's diagnosis with breast cancer. I was out running the other night and realized - I GET TO DO THIS - it's a privilege to be able to run, workout, bike... Life is short - just walk out the door and walk around the block and get inspired! Good luck.

  • I have also been through my ups and downs of running/exercising and I just encourage you to set some realistic goals and start moving towards them......Maybe the motivation you need is just to realize that this is the best gift you could give yourself - a healthier and happier lifestyle. Whatever your motivation is, post it on the fridge and various other locations and remind yourself all day long of why you are going to go for a 30 min. walk/run or whatever it is you are going to choose to do. Start out small and be faithful to that. Each week you can add a little time or maybe a new exercise and maybe change your motivation every week or so....Just some ideas. Most of all you will just find ways to push through and eventually it will become your "happy pill" once again!!
