I did Muddy Buddy Orlando this last year and I thought it was absolutely one of the best races ever. I had so much fun. My partner biked 3 legs and ran 2 while I did the opposite and finishing in the mud was awesome. The only thing I would have improved is that they posted the results on a teeny tiny board and stapled them all in weird ways so u had to rip sheets down and spend like an hour looking for ur team results. Would have had a much better setup for that but otherwise it was great. Hope this helps!

I also did the Orlando Muddy Buddy this past year and had the most fun of any race I have ever done!! I didn't find the obstacles that difficult at all, very manageable for people of all fitness levels. It was challenging enough though. Of course the best part is the Mud Pit at the end and seeing all the costumes and hanging out watching all the finishers. I am surely doing it again next year and bringing more friends to do it too!

I suppose I am a veteran Muddy Buddy. I've competed in 6 of them. 5 in Chicago (Gilberts, IL) and one in Orlando (`07). Always a good time, but candidly they are getting a bit routine. No slam against the organization or my fellow competitors, it's just not as challenging for me. I have proposed an "elite division" --NOT THAT I AM ELITE by any means. I'm just looking for a two lap option. Call it what you want.
Anyway, to your specific request, I'd suggest keeping it FUN but also challenging. This kind of race is about fun, but if it's not challenging at the same time, people won't feel they got their monies worth.
Be forthright in the description of the difficulty level. Over the years, I've noticed that more and more competitors have gotten in over their heads. Muddy Buddy courses can be difficult for the a weekend warrior with no training. They can even hurt themselves. Set the proper expectation and manage to it.
You want to appeal to a wide audience, but again make sure people know what they are getting into. One of my favorite race descriptions said, "If you question whether or not you could, YOU SHOULDN'T!"
Swag is king in these kind of races. Sponsors are tough to get these days, no doubt. But work hard to get SOMETHING in the bag thats worthwhile. Be creative. It's not just about gels and water bottles. Chatchkie can be fun too.
The costume contest that they run at the Muddy Buddy is fun. I'm not into but it draws a nice response from the field. Get a local band to come out and play. And definitely set up a beer tent (and maybe some BBQ) 1 free beer for the athletes as well as a pay option--for both competitors AND spectators.
Hope that helps! --Where is the race, maybe I need a road trip!

OH! I've been wanting to do the one in Austin for the past couple years and scheduling conflicts have always gotten in the way. Have you heard of the Urban Assault? That's supposed to be lots of fun, too. You'll have to post what you think of it after you do it. :D
