Why are the swim training volumes in the beginer and intermediate half iron programs so low?

asked almost 2 years ago | Report

Im new to triathlon but have a long endurance racing background in running, paddling and surf life saving (ocean swimming). I am planning on a half iron in 7 months. My swim sessions are currently between 3 and 5 km 3 times a week.

I believe the thinking is that if you were to spend more time than that swimming your time improvements would be minimal when compared to the time improvements you would see in biking or running if you spent that extra time there. Cycling consumes a lot of time to see substantial improvements, and cycling is where the biggest time improvements can be made.

Also, most people following a beginner program.have no background in swimming, and the program is designed to just get them to the bike. Good luck in your HIM.

  • er... HIM race distance is less than 2km. So- why would you consider training 3-5km to be short? Sounds just about right. Sounds like you're a strong swimmer. Ray may have nailed it for you. It sounds like you're a strong swimmer and runner already, the bike is where the biggest time difference will be. Focus on time in the saddle.
