This morning mine was 38. That's fairly typical for me...
I don't take mine every morning, and can't steer you toward any resources... All I know is I keep an eye out for it spiking up into the high 40's... Usually means I'm either stressed, getting sick, or training too hard. Luckily, I rarely get spikes.

39 for me. First time under 40 for a while.

Yeah, I've been taking mine in the morning for the last few weeks, and notice that when it's in the 60s it's usually time for a rest day.
But beyond that, I'm not sure how to manage it when I'm on a run. It's usually in the 170-180 range during speed work. My heart rate reserve is around 142 (give or take 10 bpm), so my threshold is around 175. I think I often hit this during tempo and speed work, which I do twice a week. I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for how many times you should hit your threshold? I'm betting it depends on what I'm training for.. but I thought I'd throw this question out there anyway.
Thanks!

I think the Joe Friel Total Heart Rate Training book is a great reference. Good luck!

AM Resting rate is 43-45 most days. I only check it once every couple of weeks anymore, unless I've had a really hard week -- Then it'll idle closer to 60 for a day or so!
My threshold is also around 175, and when I hit it, it's bad news.

Take it when you first wake up in the morning. This is the best time to do it.

I recall a resting rate of 70-75 is actually considered average... That's probably on the high side for most DailyMile folks, but for the average person your rate is not out of the ordinary.

I hardly ever check mine when I wake up. It's 52 right now after being at the office for a few hours.
Chaz, buddy...just hang on a few more minutes...I'm calling an ambulance!

47, but varies depending on how hard I worked out recently and I think, how hydrated I am.
Right now, sitting in my office, after a cup of caffeine, it's 51.It's often lower when I go to bed at night, than when I wake up in the morning. Not sure if this is normal biorithym or if just due be being less hydrated.

Has anyone slept with their heart rate monitor on, and then seen what it does when you sleep? I haven't (as much as I love my Garmin 405, I'm not ready to sleep with it), but I'm curious.

I was considering getting the FitBit pedometer/HRM to do just that specific task. It will apparently measure heart rate all day but it didn't receive good reviews and was too expensive ($100 USD). It would be interested to see what my heart rate looks like over night.

I tried to get mine this morning, but it's really hard to "rest" with two toddlers jumping all over you. Lowest reading I could get was 67

Mine's 52-55 usually in the morning. Key is to keep a watch near your bed and take it before you even get out of bed. Simply walking around and getting dressed will raise it a few beats.
Oddly, it's been as low as 48 mid evening.

About 48 is pretty typical lately. I check first thing in the morning before I get out of bed, and monitor as an indicator of whether needing more rest/recovery.

mid 40s usually. Occasionally I've seen the 30s. funny story: one time I was dozing with my HRM on and had upper and lower limits set. Bottom was defaulted like at 30 and I triggered the beeper thing - think I saw 26 but got so excited it immediately spiked!

~ 48. I usually take mine when I get into bed at night. My lowest reading was 44 when I was in full-blown tri training last summer.

40-44bpm. Although, if I'm not fully hydrated, it's higher than that.

I'm with you, Suzanne. Mine's around 70, and it's common for me to hit 195 during speedwork. I hope to bring that down over the next few years, I'm fairly new to fitness.

Mine is 56. I have just started doing heart rate training and I'm looking forward to watching my resting rate go down (hopefully)
How has this gone for you? Did you decide to try it? (I've just noticed that you posted this 2 years ago now!)

Zombie thread!
I slept with my HR monitor on several months ago - the results were interesting with some high spikes in the middle of the night: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/65826075
I thnk that 5 - 5.5 hour time was when I must have been turned in such a way that the strap didn't make good enough contact. Back then my resting HR was about 55 - but nowadays if I lay down and rest for a few minutes, it's closer to 50.I've never really taken my HR in the morning, because it seems like my heart usually starts beating much faster as soon as I'm conscious enough to think about taking a measurement. Any suggestions to help with that - or just keep the stopwatch handy and everything ready for a day when I wake up more naturally (ie, not to an alarm clock or a dog barking) and only take it on those days?

50-60. But I am new to running and overweight by about 20-30 lbs, so I'm pretty sure it's the blood pressure meds pushing my resting HR so low.

Ok, I really want to wear my HRM one night...think my husband will laugh at me though!
For those with high numbers, please note that the moment you are awake and/or kicking the covers off of you in the morning, your body has already started to wake up (eg heat up), so any number you get at this point will be pointless and your real RHR will be lower than that moment's HR.
Your RHR has to be done pretty much right when you are sound asleep or the moment your body starts waking up. If you are taking your pulse sitting down, awake at the office or whatnot, thats not your RHR.

My resting HR normally runs from 46 BPM first thing in the morning when my body is physically fully recovered to 52 when I'm not. Normally during the day, with movement, it runs in the mid to upper 50's. In the 80's when I ran my marathon, I've recorded morning HR's as low as 38. I'm 70 years old.
