Chest pains?

posted almost 2 years ago | Report

Need some advice...yesterday I was doing my long run and started getting some chest pains. I slowed to a walk, the pains went away, then I started running again. A few miles later the pains came back, I slowed to a walk, but the pain wouldn't go away. At that point, I quit my run for the day, but was still having slight pain into the evening. My HR was up but not super high at any point.

Has this ever happened to anyone? I have an appt with my doctor, but just wanted to see if this had happened to any other runners.

Thanks!

  • I have not had this happen, but I think you are doing the right thing by going to the doctor. Make sure that ticker is okay!! Good for you for making the appt.

  • I get some minor chest pain that is "referred pain" related to gas. There are also chest pains that are related to a variety of lung ailments.

The thing with chest pain is knowing what's normal for you from not normal. If its not normal to have chest pain when running then see a doctor about it. There's also different kinds of chest pain... and the most dangerous causes of chest pain manifest themselves slightly differently in men and women. However, if the pain was associated with difficulty breathing, and/or tightness in the chest, and/or burning sensations in the arm pits and/or under your breasts, and/or general weakness then a doctor visit is highly recommended.

The best thing to do is see the doctor and rule out the dangerous reasons or get treatment started for the dangerous reasons.

Guessing at your age plus being a woman puts you in a low risk category for heart troubles but its still a possibility that should be checked. There's a higher likelihood its any number of other conditions from a mild infection to stress to allergies to something else. A Doctor appointment is highly recommended.

  • Definitely see the doctor. Most likely, it will be nothing major, maybe stress like Bo A. said. This happened to me about a month and a half ago. I was running and felt my chest tighten up, I became short of breath, and I had a weird pain in my shoulder area. I had been having recent palpitations prior to that, so I felt it was best to see the doctor. Long story short, the doctor saw me and sent me to the ER, just for some precautionary tests. In the end it turned out to be nothing serious, but the palpitations have stopped and I haven't had any symptoms since. It was likely stress or anxiety over the upcoming half marathon I had.
In the end, it's better to be safe than sorry!

  • Did you go to the doctor re: your chest pains? I get them periodically, too and took myself to the doctor twice. After two EKGs and a blood test (to see if the pain was cardiac-related), the results were the same; all negative. I eat a ton of veggies and fruit, which I suspect are the culprit - I hope! I would hate to stop running, that's for sure.

  • Yes I just went through this..I would get pains near the end of the run and then after. Had full work-up EKG, Treadmill stress test, bloodwork ect. All came back normal. I had been under alot of stress and stressed while running coming off of an injury and working into my threshold alot. Started training a little less, sleeping more..as my sleep was poor when this was going on. I was also having anxiety so dealt with that issue. Doc said I am very fit and was not concerned due to all the other factors going on.

Do go in and get looked at..as I said to my doc..it is probably nothing but I do not want to be one of those runners.

Mine might have been situational but just in case he gave me Nitro and also said if it comes back It could be acid reflux and I am to try those meds for 3 weeks and if still it is happening then more tests. It has been a month and I have not had any significant issues unless I get very little sleep.

    Good Luck

  • I see this was posted two months ago. What did the medical visit turn up?

  • Thanks for asking.....the visit didn't turn up anything and the problem hasn't occurred ever since. My doctor suggested that maybe I was just under a lot of stress!
