Itchy thighs

posted 10 months ago | Report

I do my work outs early in the morning, and somewhere after running 1.5 miles my thighs start being itchy. When l do them in the afternoon or evening my thighs aren't as itchy. Am l the only one with this problem ?

I've had problems with itchy thighs before. They stopped doing that after a while. I'm not sure what caused them. Hopefully yours will go away too!

  • I've had problems with itchy legs (and sometimes stomach, too). The same happened for me as with DAn, it just went away after a while. However, I had it happen again just a few weeks ago and I figured out it was because of a lotion I put on my legs shortly before the run.

  • This is usually caused by a histamine reaction, and is pretty common when you exercise vigorously for periods of time. I have it from time to time, and it seems to be triggered by the duration of my workout as much as anything else. It seems to be slightly better whith tighter shorts or pants then loose ones that rub at all, but your experience might be different. It seems to happen less frequently as the frequency of my workouts has increased as well.

Rest assured, it's normal and will come and go.

  • I love this question, since I am a sufferer of horrible itching which changes spots throughout my body. Usually I get these itchy spots after long, hot and sweaty runs, but not necessarily. I have tried a new special dermatology cream which seems to help - I have even had to resort to Prednisone to knock it out completely for about a year. I get it all over, no constant spot, often on my lower legs, mid arms, breast area and the first time I felt it was on my face which was awful. It comes back. It is, I have been told, a histamine reaction. It is so annoying and worth talking to a sports doc about as there are ways to minimize the discomfort. I usually feel it in the morning or in the evening. My runs are always in the morning. I thought I had allergies and went in for allergy testing. One doc suggested I have some odd allergy. No matter, it is certainly distracting.

Pamela, I'm not a doctor but wondered if you have tried benadrylmor another allergy med shortly before or right after a workout? Is that an option that your physician discussed at all?

  • Mine used to do the same especially when walking on cold days before I became a runner. Now they only do it for a couple runs when I resume running after an injury break. Keep at it, the itch will go away soon as your body grows new capillaries to keep up with the demand.

  • It tires me out so very much and I generally don't like the side effects so I suffer - I know I should re-try this remedy, but lately the itching is even stronger. I was taking benadrylmor, prescription strength at night, but I was waking up so grogging, I would be too tired to run. It is a catch 22 for sure!
