Trail shoes

posted 10 months ago | Report

Fairly new to DM here. I left the 5k camp last year and am working up to a full marathon. about 1/2-3/4 of my running is motorcycle trails in open desert and arroyos (for you outside of the desert, this is where the water runs if it rains). I am coming up around the 350 mile mark on my shoes, so it is about that time to begin rotating in a new pair. I am currently in a pair of New Balance 814's. My only complaint - I want a little less shoe. Otherwise I totally love them. I run a EE width, so I begin to narrow things down some with that. Considerations are NB770v2 or maybe Brooks Cascadia. NB leans towards US made and no animal glues, Brooks uses recycled products in many shoes and no animal glues, which are huge things for me. Any thoughts, experiences or alternate recomendations?

  • Find a store to try them on so you know they fit your feet well. The last used by NB just doesn't work with my feet. While I've never owned a pair of Brooks, I've tried on a few and they seemed acceptable, though never my favorite. FYI - I'm currently running in all Saucony, but I'm thinking of a pair of Merrell Trail Gloves for my next pair.

  • Start forefoot running instead of heel-striking and replacing shoes due to mileage will be a thing of the past - your calves do the cushioning as they were meant to, not your shoes. Low (4mm) or zero-drop is perfect for forefooting. Check out Merrell trail gloves and Altra shoes - they have a new trail shoe coming out in a month or two (Altra Superior).

  • I have almost 300k of sand/rock/root/dirt terrain on my Merrell pace gloves (women's version of trail glove) and they're still going strong. Would happily recommend them to anyone who runs offroad. Super light, very cool, zero rise with just enough lug to keep you grounded. Not sure on the width though.

  • I use the salomon xa pro 3d ultra 2 shoes, very durable light and cool if you dont take the gtx version, great for boggy, rocky, muddy and very wet conditions, not sure how they perform in desert though

  • The Merrell Trail Glove comes in wide widths, although you may only find them on Merrell's website, Zappos seems to sometimes carry them.

  • New Balance is coming out with a new trail shoe the MT1010, available in wide widths which looks interesting, ETA mid-August. The Merrell Trail Gloves are very tempting though, but I feel like I might need a bit more cushioning for some of the trails in New England.

Gil, any idea how the Altra Superior's differ from their other models? I did a quick search and didn't find anything about them...

  • Thanks to everyone so far with the responses. My local running store is, of course, the first stop. Gil had noted the forefoot strike, which I got straightened out a couple of months ago. The Altras sound interesting....put a FB message in regarding some questions. The mileage thing....I wasn't aware this was a cushioning issue....I thought that somewhere by 500 miles was when they would have issues falling apart, since I never tracked mileage until the past year. Will see what I end up with....in the meantime....
