Some questions about shoes...

posted 4 months ago | Report

Hi there

I got my runnIng shoes from a specialist running shop about 15 years ago. They analysed my gait etc and I was happy with my shoes, but as far as my becoming a runner was concerned that time was the first of a few false dawns:-/

Fast forward 15 years and I am now doing well on a c25k program and enjoying it for the first time ever. My concern however is that whilst my shoes have done, probably, less than 50 miles , are they still fit for purpose or do they degenerate just with time rather than use?

Also I have had two children since then and wonder whether pregnancy changes your gait due to the movement in hips/pelvis?

Money is quite tight so don't want to get new shoes if it's not likely to be necessary yet but on the other hand I don't want to get injured. I know I could go to a running shop to get checked out but know that I will end up buying some if I go in there whether I need some or not lol

Any advice gratefully received :-)

  • Hello!

Unfortunately you need new shoes. They do degenerate. You are taking more of a risk for injury if you use them. They have also made many improvements to running shoes over the last 15 years. You don't have to go into those fancy running shops to have a gait test done. I personally stay away from these stores. They are more hype than help. You can achieve this by a simple test with paper. Go online and it will give you specific instructions. Once you have an idea on the type of shoe you need shop online!!! You can find great deals online. I am a runner and cyclist and spent the last two years dealing with injuries. Thank goodness all is well now. I am only 42 and I have severe spine issues but I can run today because of my shoes and my chiropractor! LOL I hope this information helps you! Good luck!!

  • I cannot speak to the impact of child bearing on your gait or footstrike, but I would take the shoes into a "reputable" running store. Ask around where runners you know get their's and take the shoes in for them to look at to see if they are still ok. if you do need to get new ones, explain your budget and ask them to work inside that. Shoes are the one area it is imperitive to make the right choice. Bad Shoes = injury

  • If you're a fore/midfoot runner, the shoes may be usable. If you are a heel striker like most, than the shoes are dumpster bait. Sorry, but as was already responded, time alone will break them down and they won't offer enough cushioning and support for a heel striker. Plus, everyone is different, there is a chance your feet, etc have changed from time, pregnancy, etc.
Go to reputable store specializing in running (NO models, sports authority, etc) and have them help you find a shoe that works for you. It's not a nice thing to do, but after finding one that works, you say you want to think about it and then shop for better price online (don't forget shipping though if you do). Chances are though, you'll be better off buying at least 1st pair at running store.
