How exciting! I'm hoping to do the Chicago Marathon in 2013. I'm running my first half in 8 days, so I'm not experienced ... but I'm aspiring ... would be happy to cheer you on and learn from your training. FR sent :)

Welcome to DM! I ran Chicago last year for the first time (7 marathons overall), and I'm interested in your journey. (I used the Higdon Intermediate 2 program) If I can help, I will...I can certainly share the things that went wrong! One day hoping to get back for round two--revenge will be mine! FR on the way.

Hi J - I've run Chicago a couple of times and it is a lot of fun. Be ready to run with 45,000 of your closest friends! The first 2-3 miles it is very crowded so take your time and go with the flow. You probably will not get into your pace until about mile 2. The course is flat and it is a lot of fun to run through the different neighborhoods (Boys Town with guys dressed as cheerleaders, Little Mexico with fun music, Little Italy where someone is always cooking smells great, Pilsen the old Czech area and China Town which I love). The race has over a million spectators! Bring a throw away sweatshirt and gloves because hopefully it is cold at the start and throw it away before you cross the start line. They pick up all the clothes and donate to the homeless. If it is warm, the race can be very challenging; above all enjoy the surroundings and atmosphere. Have Fun!

Awesome! I just registered for Chicago too. It will be my 3rd marathon and I can't wait. I hear Chicago has amazing crowd support. Even if the support is simply on par with my other marathons, I am sure it'll be great!
Good luck with your training. FR sent

I will also be running my first marathon in Chicago this October and I'm excited! I am also training for my first half marathon in late April, so I guess that will be my long run/transition into marathon training :-)

You are going to have a blast doing Chicago. I ran three Chicago's and found it was a good choice to kick-off competing in Marathons. The course is flat and the spectator turnout is amazing. You will be hooked after this one.

I am running my first marathon in Chicago, too! I am excited and nervous! I haven't decided on the training plan I will use, but it seems like a lot of people use the Higdon. I've ton several 1/2s, run about 20 miles a week now, but think this is the year to try the full! Don't forget to watch the documentary, Spirit of the Marathon, which chronicles several people preparing for Chicago - from first-timers to elite runners. Really fascinating and inspirational.
Good luck, and stay in touch!

I'm a first-timer signed up for Chicago, as well. I've modified Uncle Hal's plan a bit, but on a similar path. Best of luck to you!

Congrats. You will love it. I have ran 2 marathons. The first was great, the second was 10 years later and 20 pounds heavier when I started training again. The end result was well in two words 'not good'. But I finished, I just call that one my perseverance medal. The first one is the easiest unless you have a certain time goal to meet. Otherwise run to finish and you will. Especially with the DM community supporting you. FR sent.
