Heart rate training guide wanted

posted 4 months ago | Report

I do not seem to easily find a generally accepted authority on heart rate training--I'd like to know more about it, how it can be used in marathon training, etc. Any help is appreciated.

  • Joe Friel is a well known trainer using heart rate training, he has written many cycling training guides. I would suggest start looking there. I would imagine the methods for cycling can be adapted to running, if he hasn't written any running specific guides.

  • he he he. yeah- it's a tricky one. There's a lot to know. This will get you started. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=633

Best to base your training off of your Lactate Threshold HR- which will be different between running and cycling. Then your training zones 1, 2, 3 and 4 are a percent of your LT (not your max). The key is to learn your own body, as HR drifts as you get warm and dehydrated. So, what feels like zone 2 will continue to feel like zone 2 but your HR will creep into zone 3 and 4 on a long run. that's kinda' OK.

Here are a few articles to get you started. My HR monitor saved my running career- as it got me to slow the f%$&! down! for most of my training runs.

  • I trained for my first marathon using Heart rate training. I simply did all my runs using a HR between 140-150. I skipped any speed work because I was focusing on building up mileage. For my marathon I kept my HR between 150-160 first half and it crept up to 168 the last for miles.

I couldnt find any decent articles on HR training but Mcmillan's site pretty much explains the different training methods.

I usually refer to that article if I have any questions about running or training.

Moreys articles explain HR training pretty good.
